Latin American fencer who is capable of beating top opponents but will be looking for more consistency in results … emotional competitor who could prove to be tough fencer if able to properly channel that emotion on the strip … could show strides as he gains experience and improves bouting focus … has shown tactical improvement throughout career … well-prepared from technical standpoint, with good speed and quick reactions … improved on #54 seed with 45th-place finish at Penn State Open in fall of 2006 … first El Salvador native ever to compete with Notre Dame fencing program that has included fencers from 48 states and 24 foreign countries … the only previous Notre Dame athletics monogram winner from El Salvador is tennis player Allan Lopez Seprano, a San Salvador native who lettered in 1993 and [apos]94 … compiled 47-35 record in first two seasons wih the Irish.

AS A SOPHOMORE: Went 17-8 in regular season (2-4 at Northwestern Duals, 0-1 at NYU Duals, 8-1 at ND Duals, 7-2 at UCSD Duals) … placed 18th in Midwest Fencing Conference and ninth at Regional (in Cleveland) … narrowly missed round-of-32 at Penn State Open (fall [apos]05).

AS A FRESHMAN: Finished 30-27 in regular season (3-9 at NYU Duals, 21-12 at ND Duals, 6-6 at Duke Duals) … beat Stanford All-American Steve Gerberman (5-3) and Fullerton All-American Brian Fraser (5-2) , both at NYU … competed at several events in fall of [apos]04, including Northwestern Open, Penn State Open (21st; 5-9 in pools) and Junior World Cup in Louisville, Ky.

PREP & PERSONAL: Member of El Salvador national fencing team … graduated from Escuela Americana … son of Ernesto and Ileana Alvarado … full name is Diego Roberto Quinonez … a finance major, in the Mendoza College of Business.
