Notre Dame Men and Women Almost Perfect

Notre Dame, Ind. — At their first meet, the Notre Dame Relays, both the Irish men and women’s swim teams almost came away with a clean sweep of the events. Establishing a score of 198 the Irish women were first in eleven out of thirteen events, while the men won twelve of their thirteen events and finished with a total of 226 points.

The Irish women broke three meet records, the 400 yd. Medley Relay set by Notre Dame in 1993, the 400 yd. Butterfly Relay set by Texas Christian in 1994, the 400 yd. Backstroke Relay set by Notre Dame in 1993. Among the double women winners were: Leti Herrera, Kim Ricks, Anne Iacobucci, Natali Najarian, Linda Gallo, Laura Shepherd, Molly Beeler, and Liz Barger.

The men on the other hand only broke one meet record, the 400 yd. Butterfly Relay set by Texas Christian in 1988. Among the men double winners were: Ron Royer, Vince Kuna, John Saylor, Matt Rose, Rich Murphy, Ry Beville, Scott Zumbach, Brian Najarian, and Chris Fugate.

In women’s diving, Rhiana Saunders captured first in the one meter springboard dive with a score of 453.30, one hundred and fifteen points ahead of her nearest competitor. While in the three meter springboard dive, Gina Ketelhohn won with a score of 487.45.

Herbie Huesman’s scores of 477.85 and 516.00 put him in the top slot of the men’s three meter springboard dive and one meter springboard dive, respectively.
