Murphy Selected to Participate in NCAA Foundation Leadership Conference

NOTRE DAME, Ind. — PHILIP MURPHY (Brentwood, Tenn,), a junior member of the Notre Dame men’s soccer team, has been selected to participate in the second annual NCAA Foundation Leadership Conference, presented by Entergy Corporation, which will be held May 25-28 at Disney’s Coronado Springs Resort in Lake Buena, Florida.

This forum will provide the opportunity for NCAA student-athletes to discuss and explore critical issues facing their peers around the country; to enhance their leadership skills; and to promote better communication among student-athletes, coaches, administrators, faculty and communities.

More than 370 student-athletes will attend the 1998 NCAA Foundation Leadership Conference. Student-athletes were nominated from NCAA member institutions, including those that participate in the CHAMPS/Life Skills program.

Murphy, a three-year member of the Irish men’s soccer team, was selected from more than 850 nominations. A Dean’s List student enrolled in the College of Business Administration, he has been named a co-captain for the upcoming 1998 campaign.

The 1998 NCAA Foundation Leadership Conference will focus on topics recommended by last year’s participants as well as by recommendations of the Divisions I, II and III NCAA Student -Athlete Advisory Committees. Some of these topics will include: coaching roles in intercollegiate athletics, perception and portrayal of student-athletes by the media, and communication and leadership skills for student-athletes related to their sports, campuses and communities.

This year’s list of conference speakers includes: Robin Roberts, anchor and sports commentator for ABC and ESPN; Tom Curley, publisher of USA Today; Cedric W. Dempsey, executive director of the NCAA; and Quinn Buckner, ESPN sports commentator/color analyst and member of the 1976 Indiana men’s national championship basketball team.
