Irish Defeat IUPUI, 14-3

NOTRE DAME, Ind. – Shortstop Brant Ust set the Notre Dame freshman record with his 11th home run of the season and the Irish again put on a balanced offensive display as Notre Dame celebrated the last day of final exams with a 14-3 victory over visiting Indiana-Purdue at Indianapolis, in non-conference baseball action Friday night at Eck Stadium

Notre Dame (38-17) improved to 24-2 at home and is 29-6 since dropping a three-game series at Seton Hall on March 22-23. The Irish pounded out 18 hits, including five doubles, to raise the team batting average to .340 and team slugging pct. to .543 (well ahead of the respective team records of .334 and .519). The team double total now stands at 119, six shy of the team record (set in ’93).

Ust–the leading candidate for BIG EAST Conference rookie of the year honors–opened the bottom of the third by drilling a first-pitch fastball from righthander Brock Tidd (1-8) over the rightfield fence. It was Ust’s sixth opposite-field home run of the season (he also has cleared the centerfield fence twice) and sparked a six-run inning that gave the Irish a 9-0 lead. After four consecutive walks to the top of the Irish order, Ust came to the plate again in the third and smacked a two-run single up the middle.

Current sophomore DH/catcher Jeff Wagner held the previous Irish freshman home run record, after collecting 10 home runs during the 1996 season (Wagner’s 16 home runs this season are most ever by an Irish sophomore).

Ust’s home run was Notre Dame’s 63rd of the season, one shy of the team record set in ’93. Wagner (16), senior catcher/DH Mike Amrhein (13) and Ust (11) earlier this season became the first three Notre Dame players ever to each hit 10-plus home runs in the same season.

Notre Dame will gun for the home run record in its regular season finale, Sunday at home vs. the University of Chicago (noon). The Irish open play at the double-elimination BIG EAST Tournament on Tuesday, May 13 vs. Villanova, starting at noon local time in Norwich, Conn. (at minor league Dodd Stadium).

Seven Irish starters collected two hits vs. the Metros while freshman first baseman Jeff Felker was 3-for-4, with two runs scored. Senior third baseman J.J. Brock, batting in the #9 spot, went 2-for-4 with two runs scored and three RBI. Sophomore leftfielder Allen Greene went 2-for-3 to conclude a memorable four games vs. IUPUI this season, batting a combined 11-for-14 vs. the Metros (including a record-tying five-hit game on March 20).

Senior righthander Darin Schmalz picked up Friday’s win after pitching the first two innings in a planned rotation. Schmalz faced just seven batters while recording four strikeouts and allowing only one hit. The start was the 52nd of Schmalz’ career, tying him with Brian Piotrowicz (1987-90) for second in Irish history (Tom Price started a record 56 games from 1991-94). The win improves Schmalz’ career record to 30-12 while moving him into a tie with Al Walania (1990-93) for fourth on the Irish career victories list.

A pair of sophomores–lefthander Chris McKeown and righthander Alex Shilliday–each pitched two innings in relief of Schmalz before senior righthanders Mike Balicki (seventh) and Larry Mohs (eighth-ninth) closed out the game. The Irish pitchers combined for 13 strikeouts, including five from Shilliday, while allowing just five hits and two walks. Errors by Brock and backup shortstop Paul Turco allowed IUPUI to push across three unearned runs in the sixth while the Irish lowered their team ERA to 4.74.

NOTES:

The big strikeout night brings the Irish pitching staff’s season strikeout total to 364, just one shy of equaling the third-most in team history and only 28 off the record mark of 392, set by the 1993 staff.

Senior centerfielder Randall Brooks went 2-for-3 in Friday’s game, moving past Joe Binkiewicz (1989-92) into 8th on the Irish career hits list, with 225 (’94 grad. Greg Layson is 7th, with 229).

Amrhein’s two hits give him 86 for the season and finally place him among Notre Dame’s top-10 for single season hits, moving into a tie with former teammate Robbie Kent (’94) for 10th, just one out of 9th, three out of 6th and four out of 5th.

Amrhein scored twice vs. the Metros and continues to have the rare distinction of leading the Irish in runs (67) and RBI (67) … he is on the verge of becoming the third Irish player ever to total 70 runs and 70 RBI in the same season.

Wagner (79), Ust (79) and Brooks (78) on Friday moved closer to joining Amrhein in the 80-hit club.

Greene smacked his 19th double of the season on Friday, one behind Wagner (20) as they bid to become the first pair of Irish teammates with 20-plus doubles in the same season.

Wagner (.395) and Ust (.391) continue to flirt with a .400 season while Brooks (.366), Greene (.356), Brock (.354). Felker (.335) and junior second baseman Todd Frye (.306) all raised their season batting averages after Friday’s outburst.

Mohs lowered his season ERA to 3.10 while Schmalz dropped to 3.32 and McKeown to 3.60.
