Irish Split at Pitt, Clinch Spot in Big East Tournament

PITTSBURGH – Allen Greene, Jeff Perconte and Mike Amrheineach hit two home runs in the opener before Pittsburgh overcame afour-run deficit in the nightcap, as the Irish split a doubleheaderwith the Panthers, 11-8 and 6-7, in BIG EAST Conference actionSunday at Trees Field.

Sunday’s victory–coupled with Seton Hall’s pair of home lossesto St. John’s–assures Notre Dame of at least a second-place finishin the National Division and a corresponding automatic berth in thesix-team BIG EAST Tournament (May 13-16 in Norwich, Conn.).Third-place Seton Hall (13-11/.591) has concluded its conferenceseason while Notre Dame (37-12 overall, 12-6 BIG EAST) can finishwith a conference winning pct. of no lower than .571 (12-9).

The top two teams in both the American and NationalDivisions–plus two “wild card” teams–will advance to the BIG EASTTournament. The Irish maintain first place in the National Divisionover Rutgers (13-8), which split at home Sunday vs. Connecticut. Anycombination of two Notre Dame wins/Rutgers losses in next weekend’saction would give the Irish the division title (Notre Dame isscheduled to play three home games vs. Georgetown while Rutgers willplay a three-game series at postseason hopeful Villanova).

All but one of Notre Dame home runs in the opening game weresolo shots–including leadoff homers by Perconte in the first,Greene in the second and Amrhein in the fifth. Greene followedAmrhein’s blast moments later with a solo shot over the fence instraightaway center field. Perconte followed up a sixth-inningtriple by J.J. Brock with his second home run of the game and, twobatters later, Amrhein cleared the fence in left-center.

Amrhein’s pair of home runs moved him past former teammate RyanTopham (34) into second place on the Notre Dame career home runslist (35), two behind all-time leader Frank Jacobs (1989-91). Thelast time three Irish players all homered twice in a game occurredin a 17-8 win at Bowling Green on April 6, 1995–when Topham, CraigDeSensi and George Restovich each sent two balls out of the park.

Greene extended his hitting streak to 13 games while batting6-for-9 with six RBI in the doubleheader. Peconte, a switch-hittingfreshman who has been used in right field the past three games, again delivered after going 5-for-7 in Saturday’s doubleheader atWest Virginia. Perconte, who had just 24 at-bats prior to theweekend, batted 4-for-8 from the leadoff spot vs. Pitt and scoredfive runs.

Notre Dame led 8-4 heading into the bottom of the seventh in theseven-inning opener but Pitt pushed across four runs to force extrainnings. The Panthers had the winning run on second with two outsbut Scott Lobaugh fouled out to rightfielder Perconte.

The Irish pulled off the winning rally in the top of the eighth.Righthander Eric Rosing (0-6) led off the inning by hitting Percontewith a pitch and the speedy freshman stole second before moving ontothird when backup catcher Kevin Knox threw the ball in to centerfield. Rosing struck out Randall Brooks and issued Mike Amrhein anintentional walk. An infield popup by Jeff Wagner was followed by agame-winning, linedrive single to left field by Brant Ust (who laterextended his hitting streak to 15 games in the nightcap). Greeneadded a two-run triple down the rightfield line and Schmalz got outof a two-runners-on jam to give the Irish the opening win.

Schmalz improved to 7-2 for the season while posting his sixthcomplete game. His 28 career victories rank fifth all-time at NotreDame and his 50 career starts trail only Tom Price (56) and BrianPiotrowicz (52) in Irish history.

Notre Dame opened the nightcap with a four-run top of the first, highlighted by an RBI single from Greene and a two-run double byFelker. Brock’s single in the fourth plated Felker for a 5-1 Irishlead but Pitt scored three unearned runs in the bottom of the inningon Jason Workman’s bases-loaded triple down the leftfield line.

Pitt tied the game with a run in the fifth before the Irishsurged back ahead in the seventh. Perconte again was hit by a pitchand moved up on Brooks’ sacrifice bunt. Amrhein then smacked atriple over the head of stumbling rightfielder Chris Delsignore, with Amrhein putting on the brakes at third on the nearinside-the-park home run. Wagner then hit a grounder to secondbaseman Sam Crowley, who nailed Amrhein trying to score in whatwould proved to be costly lost run for the Irish.

Pitt won the nightcap in the bottom of the eighth, off freshmanrighthanded reliever Tom O’Hagan. Hot-hitting Steve Dickinson hit aone-out single and pinch-runner Jeff Sofran stole second beforeDelsignore sent a triple to the gap in right-center. Jason Oliverthen hit a grounder to second (just as Wagner had moments earlier)but Todd Frye’s throw was too high for the catcher Amrhein tohandle, with pinchrunner Mark Mahalovich sliding home as the winningrun.

The Irish had two men on in the top of the ninth but Wagner hitinto a game-ending fielder’s choice.

Starting sophomore lefthander Chris McKeown again pitched well, allowing just two earned runs (plus three unearned runs) on ninehits and walk over the first six innings (with six K’s).

NOTES: With the addition of Perconte (.359), every Notre Damestarter currently is hitting .316 or higher … the Irish pushedtheir team batting average to .335, just ahead of the team record(.334, set in 1989 and ’93) … Notre Dame’s home run total nowstands at 55, just nine shy of tying the 1993 record total (64) …102 doubles and 29 triples have contributed to a .532 team sluggingpct. that is well ahead of the Irish record (.519, in ’93).
