Brooks, Balicki Highlight 10-8 Comeback Win Over Villanova

NOTRE DAME – Senior centerfielder Randall Brooks continuedhis hot hitting, going 4-for-5 with two runs and an RBI, whilesenior righthander Mike Balicki bailed out an injury-riddled Irishpitching staff, as Notre Dame came back from an early 4-0 deficit tobeat visiting Villanova, 10-8, in Big East Conference action Sundayat Eck Stadium.

The win is the seventh straight for surging Notre Dame (29-13, 10-4Big East), which also has won 14 of its last 15 and 20 of its last22. The Irish increased their lead on idle Rutgers (10-4) atop theconference’s National Division standings (which are based on winningpercentage), with the Irish now owning a .714 mark while the ScarletKnights are at .625. Notre Dame has won 10 of its last 11 conferencegames, since opening 0-3 at Seton Hall, and is now 17-1 at home thisseason.

Villanova (18-22, 6-10) saw its slim postseason hopes fade evenfurther, as the Wildcats trail Connecticut (8-8) by two games in therace for the final spot in the six-team Big East Tournament, whichwill include the top two teams in each division pus two wild cardteams. The Irish need to win (at best) six of their final sevenconference games to clinch the division title while (as of now) a3-4 mark down the stretch will likely assure the Irish of at least a spotin the Big East Tournament.

Balicki (4-0) pitched the final two and two-thirds innings in reliefof senior lefthanded starter Wally Widelski and freshman lefthanderTim Kalita. While the Irish offense was rallying, Balicki allowedjust two hits and no walks, striking out four of the 10 batters hefaced.

Widelski was pressed into starting duty after sophomore righthanderBrad Lidge was unable to pitch due to an elbow problem, becoming thefifth Irish pitcher currently sidelined due to injury. Widelski wastouched for four runs (three earned) over two a third innings, allowing seven hits while picking up one strikeout. Kalita also letin four runs (three earned) over the next four innings, allowingjust two hits but five walks (with no K’s).

Villanova scored twice in the top of the seventh for an 8-4 lead butNotre Dame then sent 10 batters to the plate in the bottom of theinning, pushing across five runs to take a 9-8 lead. Brooks led offwith his fifth triple of the season, to the gap in right-centerfield, and senior DH Mike Amrhein then went to the opposite fieldoff senior righthander Trevor Pepkowski (3-1), dropping the firstpitch he saw squarely on the rightfield line for a double. Sophomorecatcher Jeff Wagner extended the extra-base flurry, golfing a doubledown the leftfield line.

The rally continued for the Irish, with three of the next fourbatters drawing walks. Freshman second baseman Brant Ust earned his18th base on balls of the season before switch-hitting sophomoreleftfielder Allen Greene slapped a first-pitch single to theopposite left field, loading the bases and chasing Pepkowski.

Sophomore lefthander Mike Perate then took the mound but uncorked awild pitch, allowing Wagner to score and cut the lead to 8-7. JeffFelker’s groundout to a drawn-in infield held the runners at secondand third before junior shortstop Todd Frye worked his way to awalk, again loading the bases.

Senior third baseman J.J. Brock then took three straight balls and astrike and fouled off a pitch before earning the full-count base onballs, pushing home Ust as the tying run. Perate was able to strikeout pinch-hitter Pat O’Keefe but Brooks delivered the game-winninghit in his second at-bat of the inning, sending a hard-hit ball tothe left side that tipped off the glove of third baseman Rick Welshbefore glancing off the mitt of diving second baseman MartinStetina.

Villanova jumped on Widelski and the Irish early, scoring twice inthe first after three hits and a pair of Irish errors (both of whichallowed runners to move up). The Wildcats tacked on two more runs inthe third but the Irish answered with a pair of runs in the bottomof the inning, thanks to a one-out single from junior rightfielderDan Leatherman, a bunt single by Brooks (accompanied by a one-basethrowing error), an RBI single from Amrhein and a run-scoringfielder’s choice off the bat of Wagner.

The visitors stretched to a 6-2 lead with single runs in the fifthand sixth before the Irish cut the lead back to two, with a pair ofruns in the bottom of the sixth. Wagner led off with a single toleft and moved to second on a one-out passed ball. Greene thenstruck out but Felker and Frye drew two-out walks before Brockslapped a two-run, opposite-field single over the head of secondbaseman Stetina.
