Wagner Blasts Three More Home Runs, Irish Split One-Run Games at Rutgers

PISCATAWAY, N.J. – Sophomore designated hitter Jeff Wagner’s two-run homer lifted Notre Dame to a 3-2 victory in the opener and Rutgers scored in every inning of the nightcap – while overcoming two more home runs from Wagner and a late Irish rally – to win the second game, 15-14, as the Irish and Scarlet Knights split a Big East Conference doubleheader Sunday at The Class of ’53 Complex.

The split left Rutgers (15-15, 95 Big East) a game ahead of Notre Dame (22-13, 6-4) in the conference’s National Division standings, while Seton Hall remained a half game behind the second-place Irish, after the Pirates split Sunday at Villanova. Notre Dame and Rutgers are set to conclude the series on Monday (starting at noon).

Darin Schmalz (5-2) picked up his 26th career victory in the seven-inning opener while fellow senior righthander Larry Mohs picked up his second save of the season and eighth of his career, taking the mound with the potential tying run on second before forcing Chris Dorsett into a game-ending flyout.

The Irish scored the first run of the day in the top of the second, when freshman Brant Ust scored from second after an errant throw to first on an attempted double play. Rutgers answered with two runs in the bottom of the inning, after a pair of singles, a sarifice bunt and an error when Schmalz had trouble fielding a short bouncer to the right side.

Schmalz – who moved within one win of fifth on the Irish career victories list – scattered six hits and three walks over six and tow=thirds innings, tith three strikeouts

Wagner bailed out the Irish in the top of the sixth. Mike Amrhein – who struggled through one of his toughest days at the plate this season – reached to lead off the inning when shortstop Darren Fenter couldn’t find the handle on Amrhein’s sharp grounder. Wagner made the error a costly one, blasting his ninth home run of the season over the leftfield fence.

The loss was a tough one for Rutgers – which stranded nine runners – and junior righhander Mike Mundy, who scattered four hits over the full seven innings while allowing no walks and just one earned run (with two K’s).

The Irish benefitted from some big defensive plays in the first game, particularly in the final inning. Leadoff man Dave Marciniak sent a hard-hit ball down the thirdbase line but Irish senior third baseman J.J. Brock made a backhanded stab and threw all the way across the field, robbingh Marciniak of a certain double. That play took on added signifigance when Pete Zoccolillo hit a two-out double to left-center. But Mohs then took the hill and Dorsett sent a fly ball to shallow left field. Irish sophomore leftfielder Allen Greene was forced to make an awkward slide as he ran forward on the ball but come up holding the ball. After several seconds of confusion, Dorsett was called out, ending the exciting opener in dramatic fashion.

In the three-hour, 45-minute nightcap, Rutgers roughed up starting sophomore righthander Brad Lidge and three relievers, jumping out to an 8-2 lead after five innings. The Irish chipped away with two runs in both the sixth and seventh, five runs in the eighth and three more in the ninth but the Knights matched the visitors by scoring in every inning, including four times in the seventh and what proved to be the clinching two runs in the bottom of the eighth.

Notre Dame cut the lead to 13-11 in the top of the eighth, highlighted by a two-out, three-run blast by Wagner (his 11th of the season). After Rutgers had stretched to a 15-11 lead, the Irish staged one last rally in the ninth versus junior lefthander Jeff Miller, with Amrhein’s two-run single bringing Wagner to the plate as the potential game-tying run. But Miller forced Wagner to fly out to right field, ending the game.

Lidge worked the first four and two-thirds innings, allowing seven runs (five earned) on nine hits and three walks (with six K’s). Another sophomore, lefthander Chris McKeown, didn’t meet with any better luck, giving up six runs (four earned) on six hits and three walks through just one and third innings. Freshman righthander Tom O’Hagan had a solid outing, recording four out while allowing one earned run on two hits. Senior lefthander Wally Widelski recorded the final two outss, allowing an earned run on a hit and a walk.

Notes: Amrhein’s 1-for7 day dropped his season batting average to .456, still ahead of the Irish record (.447) set by Edwin Hartwell in 1993…his 0-for-3 line in Sunday’s opener marked just the third time in 35 games he has not recorded a hit this season (al in seven-inning games)…junior RHP Keith Connoly – the winner in the second game – ended Amrhein’s streak of 65 trips to the plate without a strikeout (doing so in the first) and Connolly went on to hand Amrhein just his eighth K of the season (and first ‘looking) to lead off the sixth…Wagner now has a 14-game hitting streak, during which he has launched 10 homeruns…Amrhein’s thre RBI moved him past Joe Binkiewicz (1989-92) into third place on the Irish career RBI list, with 179…senior centerfielder Randall Brooks went 0-2 in the opener but nearly came back with his third five-hit game of the season in the nightcap, going 4-for-6 (he reached on an error in the 9th after four straight singles)…Brooks raised his average to (.358 hightest since the second day of the season).
