Notre Dame Sweeps Boston College

Brooks First Irish Player With Two Five-Hit Games

NOTRE DAME, Ind. – Senior centerfielder Randall Brooks(Hazelcrest, Ill.) became the first player in Notre Dame baseballhistory to twice record five hits in a game while the Irishcatcher/designated hitter platooning duo of senior Mike Amrhein andsophomore Jeff Wagner continued their hot hitting, as the Irishswept a doubleheader from visiting Boston College, 11-6 and 16-3, incross-divisional Big East Conference action Sunday at Eck Stadium.

Notre Dame (19-12, 5-3 Big East)–winners of 11 of its last 12games–moved to within a game and a half of National Divisionco-leaders Seton Hall and Rutgers (both 7-4). The Pirates droppedtwo at home to West Virginia on Sunday (3-5 and 10-13 in 11 innings)while Rutgers split at home with Pittsburgh (6-5, 4-6). TheIrish–who dropped three at Seton Hall to open league play–nextweekend travel to Rutgers for a pivotal three-game series.

The Irish also moved a game in front of Georgetown (5-5), whichsplit at Connecticut (0-11, 8-6) while Villanova (2-6) remains lastin the division after dropping a pair at St. John’s (1-3, 6-18). WVU(10-1) leads the American Division, followed by St. John’s (5-2),UConn (4-4), Pitt (5-7), Providence and BC (both 1-8). The first andsecond-place teams in each division, plus two “wild card” teams, will advance to the Big East Tournament, to be held May 13-16 inNorwich, Conn.

Boston College (9-11, 1-8) allowed two unearned runs in the firstinning of the opening seven-inning game, allowing the Irish an early4-0 lead, and the hosts went on to add four runs in the fourthbefore BC made the final score close with four runs of its own inthe top of the seventh. The Eagles then hung with the Irish in thenine-inning nightcap, trailing just 4-1 through four innings, beforeNotre Dame scored four times in both the fifth and sixth and twicemore in the sixth.

Notre Dame pounded out 16 hits in the first game and 20 in thesecond (equaling the Irish season-best), with a balanced hittingeffort that was led by an impressive combined 25-for-35 day fromthe #1-#4 hitters (senior centerfielder Pat O’Keefe, Brooks, Amrheinand Wagner).

O’Keefe had three hits in both games, going 6-for-11 with a triple,a double, six runs scored and an RBI. Brooks batted 7-for-8 in thedoubleheader, with three doubles, a sacrifice fly, a walk, five RBIand two runs scored. Amrhein finished the day 5-for-8, blasting histeam-leading ninth home run of the season in the nightcap whiletotaling six RBI and seven runs scored in the twinbill (plus his20th walk of the season). Wagner opened the day with a 4-for-4effort, including his eighth home run of the season and fourth in as many games (matching Amrhein’s weekend home run output). The 6-3,220-pound Wagner totaled three RBI and three runs scored in Sunday’stwo games.

Notre Dame–which totaled 17 hits in Saturday’s second game vs.Providence–has amassed 53 hits in its last three games (22 innings)and totaled 67 hits in the four games this weekend (in 28 innings).

Brooks–who was hitting just .200 on March 10–has raised hisbatting average to a season-best .336 while collecting hits in 17 ofhis last 18 games (he ranked third in the BIG EAST last season, at.396). Brooks’ effort in Sunday’s nightcap marked just the 10th timein recorded Notre Dame history that an Irish player has totaled fivehits in a game (no player ever has totaled six or more hits). Healso went 5-for-6 just 11 days ago, in the 14-9 win over CentralMichigan (march 27), making Brooks the first Irish player to collectfive hits twice. Sophomore Allen Greene’s 5-for-6 day vs. IUPUI onMarch 20 makes the 1997 Irish squad the only Notre Dame team ever topost three five-hit efforts in the same season (Dan Peltier and JoeBinkiewicz both had five hits in 1989, the only previous multiplefive-hit season in Irish history).

Sophomore righthander Alex Shilliday went the distance in the openerfor his first career complete game while sophomore lefthander ChrisMcKeown turned in one of his best efforts of the season in thenightcap, picking up the win in relief after allowing just twounearned runs on five hits and two walks over six innings (with fourK’s).

NOTES

Wagner now has seven home runs in his last nine games while raising his season batting average to .388 (after slumping to .286 on March 22).With 31 games in the books, Notre Dame is at the halfway point of its season (should the Irish repeat last season’s 62-game total). Projected over a 62-game season, Notre Dame is on pace for several noteworthy statistical totals. The current .329 batting average would rank fourth in Irish history and third-best since 1980. The projected 66 home runs would top the Irish record of 64, set in 1993. The current average of 31.39 at-bats per home run would rank third in Irish history. The .523 slugging percentage would best the team record of .519 (set in 1993). The team average of 11.00 hits per game would set a new record (the 1958 team averaged 10.92). The Irish are on pace for 124 doubles and 40 triples, both of which would be one shy of the records set in 1993 and ’94, respectively. The current average of 1.06 home runs per game would break the record set in ’93 (1.03). The Irish pitching staff also is on pace for 402 strikeouts, which would best the record (392) set in 1993. Amrhein has pushed his season batting average to .477 (53-for-111), well ahead of the Irish record of .447, set by Edwin Hartwell in 1993. Amrhein’s .784 slugging pct. also ranks just ahead of the Irish record (.783, by Dan Peltier in 1989) while his .562 on-base pct. is well ahead of Eric Danapilis’ team record (.531 in ’91). He also is on pace for 106 hits, which would be second in Irish history. Amrhein’s other projected season totals and where they would rank in Irish history include: 86 RBI (2nd), 18 home runs (tied for 2nd) and 78 runs (4th). Amrhein also is averaging 18.50 at-bats per strikeout this season (111/6), which would rank 10th-best in Irish history and best by a Notre Dame player since 1982.Amrhein and Wagner are on pace for 18 and 16 home runs, respectively, which would place them among the top home run combinations in Irish history, joining Frank Jacobs and Joe Binkiewicz (20 and 15 in 1991) and Edwin Hartwell and Eric Danapilis (13 each in 1993).The irish finished 1996 with just three players who owned a batting avg. of .336 (two of which–Bob Lisanti and george Restovich–graduated, but have double that amount currently: Amrhein (.477), Wagner (.388), freshman second baseman Brant Ust (.369), senior third baseman J.J. Brock (.355), O”Keefe (.346) and Brooks (.336).
