NOTRE DAME, Ind. — The Notre Dame softball team finished the Morning News Invitational with three straight wins and a 3-3 record after sweeping a doubleheader from Virginia Sunday in Fayetteville, Ark. The Irish, who won game one 1-0 and game two 6-1, improved to 7-4 for the season, while the Cavaliers fell to 2-11 overall.

In game one, the Irish scored the only run in the top of the seventh inning when junior Lizzy Lemire (Irvine, Calif.) led off the inning with a triple to center field and then scored on a throwing error by Virginia pitcher Kristen Dennis. Notre Dame pitcher Jennifer Sharron (Agoura Hills, Calif.) allowed just two hits and struck out eight in posting her fourth win of the season. Lemire, meanwhile, went 3-for-3 at the plate, tallying three of the team’s five hits off Dennis, who fell to 0-2.

The Irish scored early and often in game two, tallying two runs in the second, three in the third and one in the fourth. Notre Dame catcher Jarrah Myers (Carbondale, Kan.) went 2-for-3 at the plate with two runs scored and three RBI, including a solo home run to score the team’s first run. Virginia scored its only run of the doubleheader in the fifth inning when pinch runner Katie Weinberg scored from third on a RBI groundout to shortstop by Jen Krill.

Irish pitcher Melanie Alkire (Union City, Calif.) picked up her first win of 2000 after going five innings and allowing just two hits and the one run. Freshman pitcher Jessica Sharron (Agoura Hills, Calif.) made her collegiate debut, entering in relief of Alkire in the sixth inning.
