NOTRE DAME, Ind. – – The 18th-ranked Notre Dame softball team split a pair of BIG EAST conference road games at Shea Field in Chestnut Hill, Mass., today. The Irish won game one 7-0, then lost the second game in nine innings 3-2. Notre Dame is now 33-11, (6-2 in the BIG EAST) while Boston College stands at 14-15 (3-3).
Two-time conference pitcher of the year Jennifer Sharron (Agoura Hills, Calif.) continued her dominate pitching in the first game. Sharron hurled a complete game 4-hitter, striking out nine Eagles. Boston College pitcher Kimberly Ryan (8-7 on the season) kept the Irish offense at bay until the fourth inning.
The Irish loaded the bases in the fourth inning as sophomore Jennifer Kriech (Indianapolis, Ind.) walked, Sharron was hit by a pitch, and freshman Andrea Loman (Riverside, Calif.) singled. Junior Lizzy Lemire (Irvine, Calif.) slapped a single to center field, scoring all three runners after a two-base throwing error by the Eagles.
Boston College faced their best scoring opportunity in the bottom of the fourth. Eagle Jennifer Asbury singled to lead off and advanced to third on Lauren Fischetti’s double, but Sharron pitched out of the jam by getting Summer Jarratt to pop up and Lisa Fischer to ground out to end the inning. The Eagles never threatened again in game one.
Notre Dame put up four more runs in the sixth, taking advantage of a BC fielding error and four walks. Lemire and Kreich earned RBIs by walking with the bases loaded and sophomore Jarrah Myers (Carbondale, Kan.) singled, also with the bases loaded, to score two more Irish runs.
Game two featured the pitching duel of Notre Dame junior Michelle Moschel (Naples, Fla.) against Boston College’s Lauren Fischetti.
The Eagles wasted no time getting on the scoreboard. In the bottom of the first, Anne Marie Ambros bunt-singled and scored when Chris Vicari homered with two outs. It was Vicari’s fourth home run of the season.
Notre Dame answered back in the top of the second with their own single-home run combination. Lemire earned her second hit of the day with a single to right field and Myers followed it up with her fifth home run of the season to tie the game 2-2.
Sharron was brought in to pitch again in the sixth after a lead-off hit by BC’s Asbury and kept the score knotted 2-2 by forcing two ground outs and a pop-up.
Neither team could put together another scoring opportunity until the top of the eighth. Notre Dame junior Danielle Klayman (San Diego, Calif.) singled with one out and freshman Alexis Madrid (Temecula, Calif.) sacrifice bunted to move Klayman into scoring position. Klayman then stole third, but was stranded when Kriech lined out sharply to right field.
With Sharron still in the game, the Eagles came to bat in the bottom of the ninth. Fischetti doubled to center field to lead off. Jaclyn Woitowski came in to pinch run for Fishcetti and advanced to third on a wild pitch. Summer Jarratt walked next, but Sharron rebounded to strike out Lisa Fischer. Jennifer Lombardi then pinch hit for the Eagles and laid down a bunt, but Woitowski was unable to score from third base. Any hope of the Irish getting out of the jam was put to rest when BC’s Julie Ulbrich singled to left field, allowing Woitowski to score the winning run.
The Irish will return home for a double header with Loyola (Chicago) tomorrow at Ivy Field. The first game is scheduled to start at 2 p.m.
