Steffany Stenglein was named co-pitcher of the week by the BIG EAST Conference office on Monday, April 15, after helping the University of Notre Dame softball team (22-13) compile a 6-1 record last week. The Irish also improved their BIG EAST Conference record to 9-1 with two victories over Connecticut and a doubleheader split with Syracuse last weekend.
Stenglein began her week combining with classmate Carrie Wisen for a no-hitter against Valparaiso on Tuesday, April 9. It was the first collegiate no-hitter for both freshmen hurlers.
Entering the circle on Friday against Connecticut, Stenglein picked up the victory in both games, pitching all eight innings of the first contest (holding the Huskies to just four hits) for a complete game shutout. She also pitched the first three innings of game two to earn a victory in the six-inning, 8-0 shutout.
In 25 innings pitched, Stenglein allowed just 12 hits and three earned runs for a 0.84 ERA. She also posted 27 strikeouts.
Stenglein shares the pitcher of the week award with Kim Ryan from Boston College, who went 3-0 last week with two shutouts.
