Softball Off Season Update

Oct. 1, 2003

The University of Notre Dame softball team completed a strong weekend of play, completing the 2003 College Jamboree at Stone City Field in Joliet, Ill., last weekend (Sept. 28-29) with a 3-1 record. The Irish defeated DePaul, Northwestern and Southern Illinois – Edwardsville before falling to Southern Illinois in the fourth game.

“We played well over the weekend, but we still have a lot to work on,” head coach Deanna Gumpf said of her team’s play.

“Everyone on the team performed well at certain times. Now we know what we need to work on for the 2004 season.”

The Irish are readying for their fall break trip to Ireland. Notre Dame will spend approximately a week in Ireland and England, presenting softball clinics and matching up with the English National Team.

The NCAA allows one overseas trip every four years and the Irish are following up on their trip to Australia in 1999.

Notre Dame will play host to two clinics during the 2003-04 off season. A hitting clinic will be held on Oct. 11 and 12, followed by a winter hitting/pitching clinic on Jan. 31 and Feb. 1. Contact assistant coach Charmelle Green (574-631-4778) for more details.

Notre Dame’s 2004 schedule is in the final stages of approval. The Irish will spend the first five weekends of the season on the road, playing at UNLV (Feb. 13, 14, 15), in Palm Springs, Fla., (Feb. 21, 22), at the NFCA Leadoff Classic (Feb. 27, 28, 29) and in Florida for Spring Break (March 6 & 7 at Florida Atlantic and March 11-14 at Florida State).
