CHICAGO, Ill. — Notre Dame’s softball team closed out the 1998 season with two losses at 11th-ranked DePaul by 1-0 and 3-1 scores. The Blue Demons scored the game’s only run in the bottom of the seventh for the win in the first game and used two home runs by Karen Stewart in the second game for the wins. The Irish end the season with a 34-22 record while DePaul improves to 45-6.

DePaul’s Liza Brown blanked Notre Dame in the first game, allowing just a single-inning single by Lizzy Lemire. She struck out seven Irish hitters and faced just one batter over the seven-inning minimum. Julie Bonk reached on an error with two outs in the seventh and went second before scoring the winning run on a single by Toni Campbell.

Jennifer Sharron took the loss to end her season at 15-8. She allowed DePaul just four hits and just one unearned run. Brown’s seven strikeouts were the most by an opposing pitcher this season.

Stewart accounted for all of DePaul’s runs in the second game with a two-run shot to put the Blue Demons up 2-0 in the third inning and a solo homer in the fifth. The Irish cut the lead to 2-1 with a run off starter Julie Luna in the fifth when Kelly Nichols singled, went to third on a double by Danielle Klayman and scored on an RBI single by Amy Laboe.

Nicole Terpstra then relieved Luna to leave the bases loaded in the fifth and closed out the game for the save. Melanie Alkire took the loss for the Irish as she allowed two runs on four hits in three innings. Angela Bessolo pitched the final three innings allowing just one run and two hits.
