BRISTOL, Tenn. – Notre Dame pitcher Jennifer Sharron (5-1) threw a three-hitter, while the Irish scored two runs in the third and fourth innings to defeat Tennessee 4-0 Saturday in the opening game of the State Line Classic. With the win, Notre Dame improved to 8-4 on the season, while Tennessee fell to 8-6.

The Irish got on the board in the third inning, when freshman Alexis Madrid (Temecula, Calif.) singled, advanced to second on an error and then scored on another error. Sharron then helped her own effort by tallying the team’s second run on an RBI single by junior Melanie Alkire (Union City, Calif.).

Notre Dame added two more runs in the fourth when sophomore Jarrah Myers (Carbondale, Kan.) walked to open the inning, advance to second on a sacrifice and then scored on an RBI single to left field by junior Lizzy Lemire (Irvine, Calif.). Lemire came around to score the last run of the game when the next batter, junior Danielle Klayman (San Diego, Calif.) singled to center field.

Tennessee’s best chance to score came in the sixth inning with runners at the corners and no outs. Sharon, however, struck out the next batter, got the second out on an unassisted play at first base and then recorded another strikeout to end the threat.

For the game, Sharron allowed three hits, gave up three walks and struck out seven in posting her third shutout of the season.

The Irish face Virginia Tech later Saturday evening in their second game of the State Line Classic.
