Softball Announces Schedule Changes

April 17, 2001

The 11th-ranked University of Notre Dame softball team has announced two schedule changes. The Irish have added a game to the meeting with #8 DePaul on Thursday, April 19. Previously scheduled as just one game, the doubleheader will begin at 3 p.m. in Chicago.

Notre Dame’s matchup with Bowling Green, which was canceled on April 11, has been rescheduled for Wednesday, May 2, at 3:30 p.m.. It has not yet been determined whether the teams will play a doubleheader or a single game on that date.

In other Irish softball news, the NCAA statistical rankings (as of April 15) have been released. Irish rookie pitcher Kristin Schmidt (Houston, Texas) has moved up to fourth in the nation in ERA (0.51). Schmidt is 17-1 this season with 153 strikeouts and eight shutouts, including five one-hit complete-game performances. She also has not given up an earned run in five BIG EAST Conference appearances.

Schmidt has combined with Notre Dame’s three-time BIG EAST Pitcher of the Year, Jen Sharron (Agoura Hills, Calif.) to post a school-record eight consecutive shutouts. The Irish pitching staff has not given up a run since the second game of a doubleheader sweep at Purdue on April 3. Sharron is currently ranked 47th in the nation in ERA (1.06).

Notre Dame’s 18-game win streak (dating back to the 4-2 loss to Cal State Fullerton in the semifinals of the Kia Klassic on March 18) is currently the best in the nation and third-best in school history. The team is also ranked fifth in the country in batting (.320), ninth in pitching (0.88 team ERA) and ninth in scoring (5.11 runs per game).
