DES MOINES, Iowa – Junior Patrick Smyth earned All-America honors in the 5,000m run Friday at the 2008 NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships at Drake Stadium. Smyth crossed the line in 13:47.82, finishing eighth in the final heat.

Smyth improved on his very strong showing at the NCAA Championships in 2007, earning a spot in the 5,000m final with a time of 13:57.32 in the preliminaries. He then ran the ninth-fastest time in school history and earned his first career track All-American honor by placing ninth in the final with a time of 13:55.53

Saturday’s action saw Kurt Benninger place 11th in the 1,500m run (3:44.95) and Alyissa Hasan completed her strong showing in the heptathlon. Hasan finished with marks of 3:44.95 (800m run), 5.79m (long jump), 31.69 (javelin), 13.87 (100m hurdles), 25.81 (200m dash), 1.69 (high jump) and 11.88m (shot put).

The summit meeting of collegiate track and field student-athletes ended with the Louisiana State women claiming the team title while Florida State captured the men’s trophy.
