NOTRE DAME, Ind. – Junior All-American Margaret Smith and senior Jaimie Morrison have earned recognition from the BIG EAST for their individual performances in helping the University of Notre Dame women’s lacrosse team to a 2-0 record this past week, the league office announced Monday.
Smith, who was named the BIG EAST Defensive Player of the Week, turned in a spectacular performance on both ends of the field as the Irish defeated No. 13/18 Ohio State, 13-8, in Loftus Sports Center Wednesday and then went on the road and took down Duquesne, 10-8, in Pittsburgh Saturday.
Against the Buckeyes Smith dominated, scoring four goals, including two that sealed the game for the Irish, and recorded four ground balls, three draw controls and five caused turnovers on defense. Against the Dukes, the Tewaaraton Award Watch List member added two more goals and collected three draw controls.
For the week Smith recorded a team-high six goals and five caused turnovers, was tied for first in draw controls with six and finished second on the team with five ground balls.
Morrison, who was named to the BIG EAST’s Weekly Honor Roll, had a team-high eight points on the week including two goals and four assists against the Buckeyes. In the win against the Dukes the Yorktown Heights, N.Y., native added two more goals.
Smith is the second Irish standout to earn defensive player of the week honors this year as she follows in the footsteps of freshman defender Stephanie Peragallo, who earned the award after a 12-10 win over Stanford Feb. 16.
Last year Smith earned a spot on the weekly honor roll three times, while Morrison was selected once.
The duo and the rest of their Irish teammates welcome in Detroit at 6 p.m. Tuesday for a non-conference game inside the Loftus Sports Center.
