April 2, 2012

NOTRE DAME, Ind. – Notre Dame women’s lacrosse midfielder Margaret Smith has earned a spot on the BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll for the third time this season, the league office announced on Monday.

The sophomore turned in a strong week posting three goals, five ground balls, 10 draw controls and four caused turnovers, including the game-winning goal in overtime against league foe Rutgers.

Against the Scarlet Knights, Smith scored the game-winning goal with 22 seconds left in overtime as the Irish overcame a one-goal deficit in the final minute of the game to pull out the 13-12 victory. She also tallied two ground balls, six draw controls and two caused turnovers in the contest.

In a 17-11 loss to No. 15 Loyola, Smith did her part, scoring a pair of goals and adding three ground balls, four draw controls and two caused turnovers.

For the year, the Westminster, Md., native leads the team in ground balls (21), draw controls (31) and caused turnovers (18) and sits third in the BIG EAST in the first two categories and second in the last category. She is currently on pace to challenge Jillian Byers’ school-record for draw controls in a season at 55.

The Irish (8-1), who are ranked in the top 10 in all of the major polls nationally, welcome No. 3 Syracuse to Arlotta for a Thursday night showdown that will be televised live on CBS Sports Network. The opening draw is slated for 7:06 p.m.
