Six Irish Qualify for Nationals on Day 1 of Regional

BLOOMINGTON, IN. – On Day 1 of the 2022 NCAA Track and Field East Regional, the Irish had six athletes qualify for the 2022 National Championship and sent four athletes through to the next round of their events which will take place on Friday.

To kick things off, three Irish in the 800 meter run placed in the top 24 to land themselves a spot in the quarterfinals. Tim Zepf took second place in his heat with a time of 1:47.79 giving himself an automatic qualifier to the quarterfinals.  Sam Voelz was right behind Zepf with a time of 1:47.79 taking third place in the heat also giving himself an automatic qualifier into the quarterfinals. Bashir Mosavel-lo finished with a time of 1:48.16 landing in the quarter finals with one of the remaining top six best times.

In the 400 meter hurdles, Max Frye was the lone Notre Dame representative. He ran for a 51.41 to end up in the quarterfinals on Friday May 27 .

In the men’s javelin, Austin Parsons and John Keenan represented the Irish. Parsons threw for a mark of 67.32m and just narrowly missed the qualifying cut off in 13th place. Teammate Keenan threw for a mark of 62.15m taking sixth place in his heat.

The Irish qualified four men’s runners in the 10000 meter race when Joshua Methner, Matthew Carmody, Dylan Jacobs, and Andrew Alexander all placed in the top 12 to automatically make it through to Eugene for the national championship. Methner ran for a time of 28:41.89, Carmody was right behind with a time of 28:42.50, Dylan Jacobs ran for a time of 28:43.22, and Andrew Alexander crossed the finish line at 28:44.55. Danny Kilrea (29:34.85) and Anthony Russo (29:37.92) just missed the qualifying time for nationals, but remain ranked in the top 2o in the region. 

Two more Irish automatically qualified for the national championship when Michael Shoaf and John Stefan both made the top 12 in the men’s shot put. Shoaf threw for a mark of 18.93m and Stefan for 18.85m.

The 2022 NCAA Track and Field East Regional will continue tomorrow with a modified schedule to accommodate impending weather conditions. The updated schedule can be found below.
