NOTRE DAME, Ind. – Six Notre Dame student-athletes have earned GTE Spring At-Large Academic All-District honors and now are eligible for GTE Academic All-America honors. Pole vaulter Mike Brown (Rancho Sante Fe, Calif.), golfer Brad Hardin (Martinsville, Ind.) and tennis captain Brian Patterson (Falmouth, Maine) will represent Notre Dame on the men’s Academic All-America ballot, while lacrosse captain Kerry Callahan (Churchville, Md.), tennis captain Jennifer Hall (Oklahoma City, Okla.) and distance runner Alison Klemmer (Troy, Mich.) are Notre Dame’s women’s nominees.

Brown, a senior who graduated from the College of Science with a degree in pre-professional studies with a 3.53 cumulative grade-point average, holds Notre Dame records in both the indoor and outdoor pole vault after finishing sixth at the 1999 NCAA indoor championships with a vault of 17-10 1/2. His outdoor record vault of 17-5 1/2 has provisionally qualified the four-time BIG EAST champion for the NCAA outdoor championships. Also a 1999 BIG EAST/Target Scholar-Athlete Award winner, Brown will attend dental school at the University of the Pacific.

Hardin, a senior who graduated from the College of Science with a degree in pre-professional studies with a 3.695 cumulative GPA, posted the second-best Notre Dame stroke average in 1990s and the seventh-best in school history at 74.77 and finished the season with a team-best six top-20 finishes. He wrapped up his career 12th on the career stroke average list (76.51) with four runner-up finishes. Also a seven-time Dean’s List student, Hardin will attend medical school at Indiana University.

Patterson, a senior who graduated from the College of Arts and Letters with a degree in American studies with a 3.460 cumulative GPA, finished his Notre Dame tennis career as the only player under 12th-year head coach bob Bayliss to win at least 80 career matches in both singles and doubles. He concluded his senior season with an 18-6 singles record and with a 36-5 dual-match singles record over the last two years. The two-time NCAA doubles championship participant helped the Irish win a pair of BIG EAST championships and qualify for the NCAA championship in each of his four seasons. Also the 1999 winner of Notre Dame’s Francis Patrick O’Connor Award for spirit, contributions and inspiration to his team, Patterson plans to attend law school.

Callahan, a senior who graduated from the College of Arts and Letters with a degree in communications with a 3.705 cumulative GPA, ended her Notre Dame career by scoring at least one goal in each of her final 29 games and in 36 of the 37 varsity women’s lacrosse games played in its three-year history. She finished the season fifth in the country in assists per game with 2.13 and 12th in points per game with 4.47. Callahan was selected to play in the STX Senior All-Star game, a first for a Notre Dame women’s lacrosse player. She was named one of five recipients of Notre Dame’s Byron V. Kanaley Award, the most prestigious honor given to Notre Dame senior student-athlete for leadership and academic success.

Hall, a senior who graduated from the College of Business Administration with a degree in accounting with a 3.489 cumulative GPA, will leave Notre Dame as its all-time women’s tennis leader in career singles wins and combined singles and doubles wins. A three-time All-American, Hall has participated in NCAA team and singles championship all four years and is a three-time NCAA doubles participant. She was named one of five recipients of Notre Dame’s Byron V. Kanaley Award, the most prestigious honor given to Notre Dame senior student-athlete for leadership and academic success.

Klemmer, a junior in the College of Science with a 3.791 cumulative GPA as a biology major, became Notre Dame’s women’s first track and field distance All-American in 1998 with an eighth-place finish in the 10,000 meters at the NCAA championships. She has automatically qualified for that event again in 1999 and is a provisional qualifier in the 5,000 meters. Klemmer also captured the ’99 BIG EAST 10,000 meters title.
