2005 NOTRE DAME WOMEN’S SOCCER – NCAA Quarterfinal at #1 Portland (Nov. 25, 7:00 PST) … The 5th-ranked Notre Dame women’s soccer team (22-2-0, 10-1-0 BIG EAST) – which received one of four national No. 2 seeds and is riding a 13-game winning streak – continues defense of its NCAA title this weekend at Portland’s Merlo Field, as the Irish face the tall task of taking on the top-ranked Pilots in an NCAA quarterfinal game on Friday, Nov. 25 (7:00 PST) … see note below for TV broadcast, internet audio and other ways to track the game … the winner faces the Penn State-Santa Clara winner in the NCAA semifinals (Dec. 2, at Texas A&M) … the top eight seeds have advanced to the quarterfinals for the first time since ’98 … the game will renew one of college soccer’s top non-conference rivalries between the Catholic “sistter schools” … ND’s 7-3-0 series lead includes a 3-1 home win in the ’04 NCAA quarterfinals (the first time the home team had won in the series, 1-7-0 plus two neutral-site games) … ND opened the NCAAs with wins over Valparaiso (5-0), #25 Michigan State (3-0) and #22 Yale (5-2), after claiming the program’s eighth BIG EAST Tournament title with a 3-0 semifinal win over homestanding and 11th-ranked Marquette and a 5-0 win over #15 Connecticut in the title game.
