NOTRE DAME, Ind. – University of Notre Dame sophomore Jenna Simon has been named to the BIG EAST Conference Softball Weekly Honor Roll, the league office announced Monday. Simon (Granger, Ind./Penn) was previously included in the season’s first weekly conference honors that were released Feb. 11.
Simon led all Notre Dame hitters who had at least 10 plate appearances last week with a .533 batting average (8-for-15). The second baseman chipped in a double, triple, four RBI, three stolen bases and team-high six runs scored during Notre Dame’s 4-1 BIG EAST swing.
Simon clocked a two-run triple and scored two runs in an 8-2 Irish win over Georgetown Wednesday, the 1,000th in program history. She then shined in the second game of the afternoon doubleheader, going 2-for-4 with two steals and three runs scored in a 15-3 Notre Dame victory.
After picking up one hit in each of the first two games against Villanova Saturday, the lefty slap-hit specialist closed the series with a 3-for-4 performance Sunday, driving in a pair of runs and scoring one more to lead the Irish to a 9-3 triumph and series-clinching win. Simon added eight putouts and 11 assists with no errors at second base during the five-game stretch.
Four Notre Dame players (Simon, Emilee Koerner, Laura Winter and Katey Haus) have combined for nine BIG EAST weekly citations thus far in 2013, with Koerner receiving conference player of the week recognition Feb. 25 and March 25, and Winter copping pitcher of the week honors March 11.
The Irish travel to Northwestern for a non-conference game Tuesday at 4 p.m. (CT) before returning to Melissa Cook Stadium to host Toledo Wednesday at 5 p.m. (ET).
