Shoaf Sets ND Record And Advances To NCAA Championships

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – The Fighting Irish track and field men’s team got the NCAA East Regionals underway for Notre Dame on Wednesday afternoon and evening. The Irish qualified one individual for the NCAA Championships and had two more move on to their event finals on Friday with a chance to move on to Eugene in June.

Michael Shoaf was the first Notre Dame athlete to punch his ticket to the NCAA Championships in Eugene next month with the performance of his life in the shot put. Shoaf set the Notre Dame program record with a mark of 18.91m to take ninth and earn a spot in the championship field.

Yared Nuguse, the NCAA record holder and defending champion in the 1,500m, easily qualified for Friday’s finals by winning his heat with a mark of 3:44.34.

In the 800m, Notre Dame’s Samuel Voelz cruised to a second-place finish in his heat by crossing the line in 1:48.47 to post the fifth best time in prelims and earn a spot in Friday’s final with a chance to go to Oregon for the NCAA Championships.

Day two of the NCAA East Regionals in Jacksonville will feature the women’s team, as events begin on Thursday, May 27 at 1:30 p.m. ET with the hammer throw and javelin.
