Shaylyn Blaney And Jackie Doherty Named To Tewaaraton Trophy Watch List

Washington, D.C. – Notre Dame senior women’s lacrosse players Shaylyn Blaney (Stony Brook, N.Y.) and Jackie Doherty (Ellicott City, Md.) are among a group of 48 women’s lacrosse players to be named to the Tewaaraton Trophy “Watch List” for the 2011 season. The award is presented annually to the top male and female collegiate lacrosse players in the nation.

The award, the most coveted and prestigious award a varsity lacrosse player can receive is a symbol of excellence in college lacrosse. The Trophy will be presented on June 2, 2011 at the historic Warner Theatre in Washington, D.C.

For Blaney, this is the third time that she has been named to the Watch List (2009 and 2010) while this is the first time for Doherty in her Notre Dame career.

After four games this season, Blaney, who patrols the midfield for the Irish, is tied for third on the team in scoring (13 points) and goals (7) while being second on the squad with six assists. For her career, Blaney is just one of two Notre Dame players to have scored 40 or more goals in each of her first three seasons and is currently fourth on the all-time goals list with 134. She is eighth all-time in points with 155 and second in draw controls with 132. Blaney entered the 2011 campaign as a preseason all-BIG EAST selection after being a first team choice in 2010. During her career, she has been selected to an all-BIG EAST team in each of her first three seasons (second team in 2008) and is a two-time second team IWLCA All-American (`09, `10).

Doherty came into the 2011 season recognized as one of the top defensive players in the nation and has gotten off to a strong start this season on the Notre Dame back line. In four games, the talented defender leads the team in ground balls (13), is tops in draw controls with nine and is second on the team with five caused turnovers. She was a preseason all-BIG EAST selection after taking first team honors in 2010 on the way to being named a first team IWLCA All-American. As a junior, Doherty led the Irish in ground balls (53), was second in draw controls with 30 and tops on the team with 40 caused turnovers. After three seasons at Notre Dame, Doherty is third all-time in ground balls (134), 10th in draw controls (83) and six in caused turnovers with 76.

Blaney and Doherty are among 11 BIG EAST players named to the Watch List. They are joined by Georgetown’s players Kelly Barnes, Jordy Kirr and Logan McCraw; Louisville’s Bergan Foley; Loyola (Md.) standouts Grace Gavin and Abby Rehfuss and Syracuse’s Liz Hogan, Tee Ladouceur and Michelle Tumolo.

The Irish duo will next be in action when Notre Dame, currently 2-2 on the year and ranked 12th in the IWLCA coaches’ poll, plays host to Ohio State at 4:00 p.m. on Thursday, March 10th. The game will be played at Arlotta Stadium on the Notre Dame campus weather permitting.
