Series Preview: Pitt

SOUTH BEND, Ind. — The eighth-ranked Notre Dame baseball team closes out the regular season home slate as they host Pitt for a weekend series at Frank Eck Stadium. The Irish and Panthers are battling for ACC seeding as two conference weekends remain before the ACC Championship in Charlotte. The series kicks off Friday night at 6 p.m. and will be streamed on ACC Network Extra. The final two games of the series will be aired nationally on ACC Network.

Irish Host Final ACC Home Series Against Pitt

  • The regular season is coming down the home stretch as the Irish are set to host Pitt in their final ACC home series of the season this weekend.
  • The Irish hold a 49-24 advantage all-time over Pitt and are 24-7 in games played in South Bend. 
  • The Irish have won the last four series against Pitt dating back to the 2016 season.
  • In the series last season against Pitt, Ryan Cole hit .417 over the series, Carter Putz had two home runs and four RBI and Spencer Myers tallied five runs scored.
  • Tanner Kohlhepp picked up both wins for the Irish after 4.2 innings of scoreless relief. Will Mercer had 4.0 innings of scoreless work in his start against the Panthers.
  • Head coach Link Jarrett has a number of ties with the Pitt coaching staff as he was teammates with Mike Bell at Florida State during the 1994 run to the College World Series.
  • Jarrett was also an assistant coach at Mercer when Pitt assistant Ty Megahee transferred to the Bears and played his final two seasons of collegiate ball in 2004 and 2005.
  • Pitt enters the weekend series with a 26-0 overall record and are 12-11 in ACC play this season.
  • The Panthers are coming off a 2-2 week after winning two-of-three at home against Duke and dropped their road midweek to West Virginia.

Big Innings Lead Irish Past Spartans

  • The Irish claimed the season series over Michigan State with the 15-6 win at Frank Eck Stadium on May 10. The Irish defeated the Spartans in two of the three matchups across the year.
  • It was the third-straight game and 14th time this season the Irish scored in double-digits.
  • Two big innings propelled the Irish to the midweek victory and it started with six runs in the third.
  • Ryan Cole blasted his seventh home run of the season to open the scoring in the third.
  • Back-to-back doubles from Carter Putz and Jack Zyska scored three runs and Spencer Myers plated the final run on his bases-loaded walk.
  • A five-run inning in the seventh put the game out of reach. The Irish had RBI doubles by Putz and Zyska and RBI singles by Coetzee and LaManna.
  • On the mound, Jack Findlay had the best start of his young career. He set career highs with 4.0 innings pitched and eight strikeouts. 
  • He improved to 5-0 this season and is the second Irish pitcher to start the season 5-0 this year (John Michael Bertrand began the year 6-0).
  • Matt Bedford made his first career appearance in the win. He tossed 2.0 innings of work with two strikeouts. 
  • After the third and seventh inning, the Irish have had 18 separate innings this year in which they have scored five or more runs.
  • This was the third game this season that they had two innings of five runs or more in the same game.

Home Sweet Home

  • After not being able to play a home game in his first season due to the pandemic, the Irish have been dominant at Frank Eck Stadium over the past two seasons.
  • The Irish hold a 31-9 (.775) record at home under Link Jarrett and are 15-2 (.882) in home games during the 2022 season.
  • Notre Dame is 7-1-1 in home ACC series since Jarrett took over and three of those seven series wins have been sweeps.
