Series Preview: #17 NC State

RALEIGH, N.C. — The third-ranked Notre Dame baseball team is back in action this weekend as conference play opens up. Notre Dame (9-1) is still in North Carolina as it gets set for a ranked matchup with No. 17 NC State (9-4). The Irish and Wolfpack kickoff the three-game series with a nationally televised game Friday night at 6 p.m. ET on the ACC Network.

11Graduate student John Michael Bertrand set a career high with 11 strikeouts in the 16-2 win over Monmouth. It was the most strikeouts by an Irish pitcher in a game since Cameron Junker tallied 11 against Canisius in 2019.
15In the 20-2 win over Marist, 15 different Irish players recorded a hit. It is the most players with a hit in a game for the Irish over the past 16 years. The previous record was 13 against Georgetown in 2008.
56Outfielder Spencer Myers has 56 steals in his Irish career and ranks eighth all-time in program history for most career steals. He trails AJ Pollock by four for seventh place in program history.

 

ACC Play Begins With Weekend Series at NC State

  • Notre Dame begins its regular season title defense as ACC play opens up this weekend. 
  • The Irish are in Raleigh for a Top-20 matchup with the 17th-ranked Wolfpack for a three-game series.
  • This will be the first ranked team the Irish face this season. Notre Dame is 12-8 against ranked opponents under head coach Link Jarrett and they are 8-4 against ranked teams on the road.
  • In 2021, the Irish won road series over No. 16 Wake Forest, No. 21 Virginia (sweep) and No. 17 Pitt.
  • NC State heads into the series with a 9-4 record this season and are 1-3 in their last four games.
  • They were swept at home last weekend against Northeastern and they defeated UNC-Greensboro in their midweek matchup on Tuesday.
  • In 2021, the Wolfpack were one of two ACC teams to make it to Omaha and finished the year with a 37-19 record.
  • The Irish took two-of-three games from NC State last season when they played at Frank Eck Stadium in April. Notre Dame won the first game 3-2, fell in the second game 5-2 and then clinched the series with an 11-2 victory on Sunday.
  • Carter Putz led the Irish at the plate in the series with six hits in 11 at-bats (.545) and had four RBI over the course of the three games. Tanner Kohlhepp picked up both wins in relief with 6.0 scoreless innings pitched.
  • The Wolfpack lead the all-time series between the two schools 13-10 and the Irish are 2-7 against NC State in Raleigh.

Coetzee III Powers Irish to Midweek Win

  • Brooks Coetzee III has been off to a torrid start and it continued in Notre Dame’s 11-3 win over Elon.
  • The senior from Mahomet, Illinois led the Irish from the dish after going 2-for-3 with a home run, double and tallied five RBI.
  • The home run was his team-leading fourth of the season and he tied a career-high with the five RBI.
  • Coetzee’s home run was in the middle of an eight-run third inning that broke the game open for the Irish.
  • The eight runs in the third tied a season high for most runs in an inning. The Irish also scored eight runs in the first inning against Marist on February 25.
  • It is the most runs in an inning since April 24, 2021 when the Irish scored 12 in the eighth against Boston College.
  • On the mound, freshman left-hander Jack Findlay made his collegiate debut against the Phoenix.
  • He earned the win after 3.0 innings of scoreless ball with three strikeouts.
  • A number of Irish pitchers saw time in the win including Caden Aoki, Matt Lazzaro, Radek Birkholz, Jackson Dennies and Roman Kimball.
  • The six pitchers held the Phoenix to three runs on the night. The Irish staff have limited opponents to three runs or fewer in each of the last seven games.

  • Since the start of the 2020 season, the Irish have been one of the most consistent teams over the past three seasons.
  • Notre Dame is 54-16, good for a .771 winning percentage over that period.
