Scott Martin Joins Men’s Basketball Staff

NOTRE DAME, Ind. — Glenn and Stacey Murphy Head Men’s Basketball Coach Mike Brey has announced the addition of Scott Martin (2008-13) to the University of Notre Dame men’s basketball staff for the 2019-20 season.

Martin, the 2012 Notre Dame Monogram Club Team Most Valuable Player, will serve as the team’s development and recruiting coordinator, which is a re-branded position taking over the staff spot formerly occupied by video coordinator Eric Atkins. Atkins recently took a full-time assistant coach position at Howard University.

“Scott has a great feel for the game and our program,” Brey said. “We talked often about his future as a coach when he was a player. After his professional career, he tried the business world for a year but has decided to return to his passion for basketball. He brings a knowledge of our program to this job, as well as strong communication skills and a great basketball I.Q.”

Martin will help support the program’s recruiting strategy, aide in the day-to-day operations of the team and provide team-specific video support.

“I am thrilled to be back home at Notre Dame and once again be a part of the basketball program,” Martin said. “I’m thankful for the opportunity to continue to learn from Coach Brey and look forward to doing whatever I can to help and contribute to the continued success of the program.”

Martin started his collegiate career at Purdue University before transferring to Notre Dame for the 2008-09 season. After sitting out the season as a transfer, he suffered a torn ACL in his left knee during a preseason workout in October 2009. After missing the 2009-10 season while recovering from his injury, the Valparaiso, Indiana, native started his next 66 games for the Irish during his sophomore and junior eligibility seasons.

Martin was named the team MVP in 2011-12, serving as one of three team captains for an Irish team that lost veteran Tim Abromaitis to injury just two games into the season. Providing veteran leadership for future stars Jerian Grant (sophomore), Pat Connaughton (freshman) and Eric Atkins (sophomore), Martin averaged 9.5 points per game and 5.7 rebounds per game while playing 34.7 minutes per game.

Martin eventually played 84 games for the Irish, scoring 776 points (9.2 average). He was granted a sixth-year of eligibility for the 2012-13 season, but his final campaign with the team was cut short by another knee injury and he appeared in just 18 games.

Recovering quickly from his 2012-13 knee injury, Martin started his professional career with the Newcastle Eagles in the British Basketball League (BBL) for the 2013-14 season. He earned a spot as one of Newcastle’s best players over the next four seasons, helping the Eagles with the BBL Cup in 2015, 2016 and 2017 while earning all-BBL second-team honors in 2014, 2015 and 2017. Martin piled up 2,220 points (15.6 average) in his four seasons at Newcastle while helping the team to a 110-25 record (.814).

Martin capped his professional career in the Czech Republic for BK Pardubice during the 2017-18 season, playing 22 games with an 11.3 points-per-game average and competing in the 2018 FIBA Euro Cup.
