NOTRE DAME, Ind. – After nine seasons under the Golden Dome, Notre Dame men’s golf assistant coach Scott Gump will be stepping away from the program. Head Coach John Handrigan will immediately begin a national search for his replacement.
“One of the most passionate, dedicated and sincere men I’ve ever met, and I will always be grateful for the nine years of excellence he provided Notre Dame Golf. Coach Gump has given so much to the great game of golf and I wish him all the best as he enjoys the next chapter with his family,” Coach Handrigan stated.
Gump has spent the last four years under Handrigan, where the program has burst onto the national scene. The 2019-20 Irish squad broke the program record for tournaments won with four, and did so over just five tournaments in the fall. They also shattered the program record with a 282.26 strokes/round average and earned their first top-10 ranking in all three major polls.
This past season, the Irish continued the upward trend by qualifying for NCAA Regionals for the first time since 2012.
Gump was a touring professional golfer for over 24 years. He earned his PGA TOUR card during the 1991 season after finishing third at the TOUR’s Q School tournament. Gump played in 10 career major championships, including the prestigious Masters Tournament two times.
