NOTRE DAME, Ind. – University of Notre Dame softball player Sarah Smith took home player-of-the-week honors handed out by the BIG EAST Conference on Monday after her performances for the Irish this past week.
Smith becomes the second Irish player to win the award as fellow senior Katie Laing has racked up a pair of weekly accolades. In Notre Dame’s 5-2-1 outing this past week, Smith recorded four multi-hit games including two three-hit performances.
Smith went 3-for-4 with two runs and one double for a .750 average in Notre Dame’s 4-3, eight-inning win over Loyola-Chicago on April 24. She also went 3-for-4 with one run and one RBI in a victory over Connecticut. The senior has racked up 16 multi-hit games on the season and is currently riding a 10-game hitting streak.
For the week, Smith went 14-for-26 (.538) in eight games with seven runs, four stolen bases, two RBI and two doubles along with a sacrifice.
Smith’s overall batting average of .385 ranks third in the league, while her .466 clip versus conference foes is the highest of any league player.
