ANN ARBOR, Mich. – Senior Britney Sanders and sophomore Quinn Gleason capped an undefeated weekend by co-winning the doubles draw during the University of Notre Dame women’s tennis team’s final day of action Sunday at the Wolverine Invitational at the University of Michigan Varsity Tennis Center.
The Irish twosome improved to 3-0 on the fall season with their second straight victory over a ranked team, downing No. 3 Emina Bektas and Brooke Bolender from host Michigan at the No. 1 doubles court. Sanders and Gleason shared the top doubles honor with Ana Vladutu and Jasmin Kling of DePaul.
Notre Dame won three of four doubles tilts against Michigan, sparked by the 8-7 triumph for Sanders and Gleason at the first court. Monica Robinson and Jennifer Kellner bookended their opening weekend with the second Irish win against a ranked team on the day, outlasting No. 46 Sarah Lee and Ronit Yurovsky 8-6 at the No. 2 court.
A narrow loss by Mary Closs and Julie Sabacinski at third singles was offset by an 8-4 win for Jane Fennelly and Julie Vrabel against Kristen Dodge and Annie Wierda. Fennelly and Vrabel finished the weekend with a 2-1 record in doubles play.
Notre Dame carried the momentum into singles play later in the day against DePaul, winning five of seven matches to close the Wolverine Invitational. No. 35 Sanders set the tone at the first singles court, dropping Vladutu 6-2, 6-4. No. 87 Gleason followed suit, claiming a 6-1, 6-2 victory over Patricia Fargas in second singles.
Robinson concluded her first career tournament with a 6-5, 6-5 straight-set decision against Kling at the No. 3 court, finishing the weekend a perfect 4-0. No. 117 Kellner kept the two-set precedent rolling at the fourth court. Closs picked up the final Irish win of the singles portion with 6-1, 6-3 effort against Jarret Fisher.
