Samantha Giacolone Tabbed IWLCA National Player of the Week

NOTRE DAME, Ind. — Senior goaltender Samantha Giacolone was tabbed Intercollegiate Women’s Lacrosse Coaches Association’s Division I Defensive Player of the Week, it was announced Wednesday afternoon (April 3).

Giacolone, who was also named this week’s ACC Defensive Player of the Week, recorded a season-best 14 saves in Notre Dame’s 9-7 victory over North Carolina on Sunday, March 31.

Giacolone currently leads the nation with a goals-against average of 6.35 and is second in the country with a save percentage of .555, which also tops the ACC. Giacolone has notched at least 10 saves in three of her last four games dating back to March 16 at Virginia.

On March 24 at Syracuse, Giacolone passed Ellie Hilling to become the program’s career saves leader, and currently stands at 543 stops in her four years in an Irish uniform.

Giacolone is also second in Irish history in goals-against average (9.30), wins (43) and minutes played (3,803).

On March 21, Giacolone and sophomore attacker Maddie Howe were added to the watch list for the 2019 Tewaaraton Award. The Irish currently have four student-athletes on the watch list for the award, which honors the top women’s lacrosse player in the country, including Giacolone, Howe, sophomore midfielder Andie Aldave and junior midfielder Savannah Buchanan.
