Sam Young Named First Team Freshman All-America by The Sporting News

Dec. 8, 2006

NOTRE DAME, Ind. – Notre Dame offensive lineman Sam Young has been named first team Freshman All-America by The Sporting News, the publication announced on Friday.

Young has started all 12 games for the Irish this season at right tackle. He has helped the Notre Dame offense rack up another incredible season. Young paved the way for junior running back Darius Walker’s second consecutive 1,000-yard rushing season. He also helped senior quarterback Brady Quinn eclipse 3,000 yards passing for the second straight season.

Young made Notre Dame history at Georgia Tech becoming the first true freshman to start the season opener on the offensive line since freshmen became eligible in 1972. Young was just the fourth Irish freshman to ever start on the offensive line joining an elite club that includes senior teammate Ryan Harris as well as Brad Williams and Mike Rosenthal.

Young has also been named a first team Freshman All-America by Rivals.com.
