Rowing Wraps Up Head of the Charles

The University of Notre Dame Rowing Team completed its first competition of the 2016-17 season at the Head of the Charles Regatta in Boston, Mass., on Sunday afternoon. The Irish finished 10th in the Championship Four time trial, while the Championship Eight team posted the 19th-fastest time in a 33-boat field.

First in the water for the Irish on Sunday afternoon was the Championship Four with coxswain Samantha Hedrick, Elizabeth Walter, Kelly Fischer, Bridget Adam and Molly Pierce, finishing 10th overall with a time of 20:22.636. The Irish group ended up as the eighth-fastest collegiate boat in the competition, which was won by Denmark in 18:44.562. Brown University was the top collegiate four, finishing second in 19:24.990.

The Championship Eight line up of Reilly Kearney ( c ), Erin Boxberger, Elizabeth Schrieber, Laura Migliore, Treasa O’Tighearnaigh, Moira Hamilton, Gretchen Bruggeman, Elizabeth Gilbert and Catherine Wagner finished 19th in 18:00.940 and was the 17th-fastest collegiate boat in the race. Cambridge and the New York Athletic Club finished one and two (16:30.368 and 16:45.568), with Yale as the top collegiate boat in third place at 16:47.046.

Previously in the regatta on Saturday afternoon, coxswain Laura Schoonmaker, along with Gen Johanni, Lauren Matchett, Meredith Swartz and Christine Schindele-Murayama started 52nd in the Women’s Club Four event, but finished with the third-best time behind Penn (19:08.815) and Wisconsin (19:12.848).

Also competing on Saturday was Notre Dame’s alumnae women’s eight boat, with Christina Dines ( c ), Teresa Rubinger, Elizabeth Kelley, Carol Ann Michel, Erin McConnell, Kelsey Haddad, Kate Suyo, Ching Ting Hwang and Paige Aiello finishing 19th in their competition with a time of 18:40.243, assuring the alumnae boat a spot in next year’s Head of the Charles event.

The Irish will have one more fall season competition, joining Ohio State, Indiana, Michigan State and Syracuse at Griggs Reservoir in Columbus, Ohio, on Sunday, Nov. 6, at 11 a.m. ET.
