Eva Gaetino - Women's Soccer - Notre Dame Fighting Irish

The anchor of Notre Dame’s stout backline from 2020-2024. Gaetino started in 75 of 76 games played. She was a two-time First Team All-American, a two-time Mac Herman Trophy Semifinalist and a two-time ACC Defender of the Year. Gaetino signed with PSG on Feb. 1, 2024, following her senior season.

  • Started in all 23 matches and logged the second most minutes of anyone on the squad with 1,936.
  • Gaetino was the anchor of the backline, flanked by Leah Klenke and Waniya Hudson. The trio only allowed 16 goals on the year. Furthermore, they only allowed 70 shots on goal over 23 games – which equates to a stout 3.0 SOG per game.
  • Notre Dame’s defensive/goalie crew completed 14 shutouts on the year – their most since 2016 (15). Their shutout percentage of 0.609 ranked 8th in the country and first in the ACC.
  • Before bowing out in the Elite Eight, the Irish were the only team up to that point to have not given up a goal in the NCAA Tournament, an 11-0 goal differential.
  • Offensively, Gaetino delivered a patented goal via header against Ohio on Sept. 11. She also recorded an assist in the Santa Clara win in the 2nd round of the NCAA Tournament.
  • Start of 2023 – she was twice invited to play with the U.S. U-23 squad. Once in Paris in a friendly against France, and the other in the 2023 Thorns Preseason tourney against NWSL squads.

As a Sophomore (2021)

  • ACC Defensive Player of the Week (Oct. 11)
  • Started all 22 games, logging over 1,774 minutes
  • Scored her first career goal in a double-overtime win over Clemson. In the 107th minute, Sammi Fisher delivered a free-kick into the box where Gaetino went full superman on her diving header for the golden goal.
  • Delivered a phenomenal through ball to a streaking Wingate for an assist in the Sweet 16 of the NCAA Tournament
  • Spearheaded the Irish starting backline (at centerback) and helped notch a 0.96 goals against average
  • All-in-all, the Irish defense allowed 22 goals as opponents averaged 9.6 shots per game. The 22 were the fewest goals allowed since 2016.

As a Freshman (2020)

  • Played and started in all 13 games in her freshman season.
  • Led the freshmen with 931 minutes played and finished fourth on the team in minutes played.
  • Was one of four freshmen to start multiple games this season.
  • Played 90 minutes or more in each of the final two games against No. 18 Oklahoma State and No.7 TCU.
