Rob Globke And Brett Lebda Selected For 2001 USA Hockey Summer Challenge

Aug. 8, 2001

Lake Placid, N.Y. – Two members of the 2001-02 Notre Dame hockey team have been selected to participate in USA Hockey’s Summer Challenge to be held August 7-12 at the Olympic Center in Lake Placid, N.Y.

Sophomore forward Rob Globke (West Bloomfield, Mich.) and sophomore defenseman Brett Lebda (Buffalo Grove, Ill.) were selected from a group of 49 players who attended the U.S. National Junior Evaluation Camp last weekend in Lake Placid. Notre Dame sophomore defenseman Neil Komadoski (Chesterfield, Mo.) who also attended the Evaluation Camp did not advance to the Summer Challenge.

The 27 players selected will participate in the week-long competition that features the Under-20 teams from Finland and the United States. The tournament began on Tuesday night (August 7) and will continue through the weekend. These players will continue to be evaluated and are prospective members of the 2002 U.S. Junior National Team that will compete in the World Junior Championships from Dec. 25 through Jan. 4, 2002 in Pradubice and Hradec, Czech Republic. The final roster for that team will be announced in late November.

Globke is one of six returning players from last year’s U.S. Junior National Team and will be making his second appearance at the Summer Challenge. This will be Lebda’s first attempt at making the U.S. Junior Team. Notre Dame has had at least one player make the U.S. Junior National Team in each of the last five years with junior Connor Dunlop (St. Louis, Mo.) and Globke making the 2001 team.

Both Globke and Lebda return to Notre Dame for their second season and along with fellow sophomore Aaron Gill (Rochester, Minn.) are the team’s top returning scorers as all three had 26 points a year ago. Globke led the team in goals with 17 in his rookie year and added nine assists for 26 points. Lebda, an all-CCHA rookie team selection on defense, tied Globke with 26 points on seven goals and 19 assists. Globke scored a pair of goals in seven games during the 2001 World Junior Championships in Russia.

Seven Notre Dame hockey players have been selected to the Junior National team since the 1996-97 season. They are: Ben Simon (1996-97, 1997-98), Joe Dusbabek (1997-98), Dan Carlson (1998-99), David Inman (1999-2000), Brett Henning (1999-2000), Connor Dunlop (1999-2000, 2000-01) and Rob Globke (2000-01).
