NOTRE DAME, Ind. ââ’¬” Incoming University of Notre Dame softball outfielder Riley Wester is set to make an additional softball stop before officially suiting up for the Irish during the 2017-18 academic year. Wester joins 15 other players from three California youth travel programs selected to comprise the So Cal All-Stars, and will play the USA Softball Women’s National Team and Mexico in an exhibition doubleheader on June 13 in Irvine, California.
Wester was one of six players from the Firecrackers ââ’¬” Rico club team selected to the So Cal All-Stars roster, with representatives of the Corona Angels ââ’¬” Tyson and OC Batbusters ââ’¬” Stith also included. The exhibition doubleheader against the So Cal All-Stars will lead into a Team USA-Mexico exhibition matchup on June 15 in Irvine.
Wester will be the second player with Notre Dame ties to face the USA Softball WNT within the calendar year. Three-time Irish All-American Emilee Koerner (’15) started a pair of games for the NPF’s Scrap Yard Dawgs against Team USA last June at ASA Hall of Fame Stadium in Oklahoma City, and finished the exhibition series with a .500 batting average, a home run and two RBI.
A member of the 2016 Premier Girls Fastpitch (PGF) National Championship squad with the Firecrackers ââ’¬” Rico U18 Gold team, Wester recently wrapped up her senior softball season at Edison High School in Huntington Beach. She was a multi-time first team all-Sunset League selection during her career with the Chargers, and checked in as the 95th-ranked player nationally in the FloSoftball 2017 Hot 100 rankings.
Wester will be the third sibling in her immediate family to attend Notre Dame as a member of the Irish softball program. Karley Wester (’17) was a two-time team captain and two-time National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA) All-American at Notre Dame prior to her graduation in May, while junior outfielder Ali Wester has been tabbed as a two-time NFCA Mid-Atlantic all-region first team selection and two-time all-conference choice during her first two seasons in an Irish uniform.
