Riley Garners GTE Academic All-District Team Honors

Notre Dame, Ind. —- Notre Dame sophomore Ruth Riley (Macy, Ind.) has been named to the GTE District V Academic All-America team. The 6-5, center who was recently named the 1999 BIG EAST Defensive Player of the Year, will now be eligible for national team honors which will be announced later this month.

Riley, a three-time member of the Dean’s List, has a 3.62 grade point average and is enrolled the College of Arts and Letters. A unanimous first-team all-BIG EAST selection this season and a member of the 1999 BIG EAST All-Tournament team, she leads the Irish in scoring and rebounding averaging 16.5 points and 8.4 rebounds.

A three-time BIG EAST Player of the Week selection in 1998-99, Riley holds the Notre Dame career shot block record at Notre Dame with 168 and the single-season shot block mark (97). She set the single-game scoring mark earlier this season when she scored 41 points against Providence on January 30. Riley also tied the single-game shot block mark with eight against Duke on November 21.
