NOTRE DAME, Ind. – In what has become almost commonplace during the University of Notre Dame’s inaugural year in the Atlantic Coast Conference, junior swimmer Emma Reaney has been named ACC Women’s Swimmer of the Week for a fifth time after taking part in four victories Saturday to help the Irish earn dual victories over Rutgers and Northwestern in Evanston, Ill.
Reaney, who has won nearly 42% (5/12) of the conference women’s swimmer of the week awards this season, claimed victory in both breaststroke events and the 200 fly before swimming the second leg with the victorious 400 free relay squad.
She opened her day with an easy victory in the 100 breast (1:00.77 – NCAA B cut), winning by well over three seconds. The Lawrence, Kan., native then dominated the 200 breast (2.14.09 – NCAA B cut) by just over four seconds before claiming the 100 fly (54.92) by more than a second. Reaney closed her day by swimming the second fastest split of the 400 free relay race (50.11) to help her team claim the final event of the day in 3:25.15, just .29 faster than second-place Michigan.
A two-time All-American and five-time honorable mention All-American, Reaney has stepped up her game even more as a junior as she has won 26 of the 34 finals swims she has competed in. Nationally, Reaney is all over the nation’s top times list as she leads the country in the 200 breast (2:05.85) and is sixth in the 100 breast (59.22) and 200 IM (1:55.18). She also shows up in the relay top times with her Irish teammates in the 200 free (24th – 1:31.55) and 200 (21st – 1:39.80) and 400 medleys (16th – 3:36.84).
A standout in the classroom as well, Reaney carries over a 3.6 grade point average into the spring semester, having earned a spot on the Dean’s List twice in five semesters.
Winners of six of its last seven dual meets, Notre Dame (6-4) returns to action at 11 a.m. Saturday when it travels to battle former BIG EAST archrival Louisville at Ralph Wright Natatorium.
