COLUMBUS, Ohio – The University of Notre Dame’s Emma Reaney and the 400 medley relay team highlighted a strong first day for the Irish women’s swimming team at the Ohio State Invitational Friday. Reaney lowered her own school record in the 200 individual medley, while the 400 medley relay also set a new school standard.

Her time of 1:55.05 lowered her previous record from last season by over a half of a second and automatically qualifies her for the NCAA Championships in March. The time is also the top time in the country this year in the event.

The 400 medley relay team comprised of Kelly Ryan, Reaney, Kim Holden and Catherine Galletti brok the old record of 3:35.89 set in 2011, as the foursome went 3:35.16 to finish second.

Notre Dame sits in fifth place with 117 points in the team standings following the first night of finals.

200 Free Relay: The quartet of Catherine Galletti, Kelly Ryan, Kim Holden and Reaney motored to an NCAA B-cut time of 1:31.44 and fifth place in the first event of finals … the squad of Christen McDonough, Lauren Scott, Mikelle Masciantonio and Suzanne Bessire recorded a time of 1:34.36 as well.

500 Free: Jaime Malandra was the highest-finishing Irish swimmer, collecting 19th place with a time of 4:51.76, the fastest time of the season so far for the team … Gracie Fredlake also posted a strong showing, registering a swim that finished in 4:54.36 … Bridget Casey (4:56.92) and Bessire (4:57.15) also competed in the event.

200 IM: Reaney demolished the field as well as the Irish team record by stopping the clock in a new meet-record time of 1:55.05 … this time bests her top efforts from last season by over a half of a second and also earns her an automatic invitation to the NCAA Championships … Genevieve Bradford (2:04.27), Lauren Scott (2:04.05) and Melissa Scott (2:04.57) also recorded strong times for Notre Dame.

50 Free: Freshman Galletti made an appearance in the championship final heat, touching the wall in 23.37 to earn tenth place in the splash and dash … Galletti swam a season best time of 23.04 in prelims … Kelly Ryan, swimming in the “B” final, came in 13th with a time of 23.32 … McDonough posted a time of 24.06 in the “C” final.

400 Medley Relay: The Irish women were in fine form, besting the prior meet record but coming up short as the squad of Ryan, Reaney, Holden and Galletti recorded a NCAA B-cut with a second place finish in 3:35.16 … the squad of Sarah Dotzel, Laurent Stauder, Casey and Bessire registered a time of 3:42.93 in the same event.

Irish Divers Claim Top Honors On Boards In Iowa

Chiang, Caserato go first and second

IOWA CITY, Iowa – University of Notre Dame divers Jenny Chiang and Allison Casareto went one and two in the 1-meter competition Friday night at the University of Iowa Aquatic Center.

Chiang continued her winning ways as she breezed to the win with 316.80 points. Casareto then handily took second with 299.60 points. Freshman Emma Gaboury took fourth with 272.95 points.
