ATLANTA – A runner-up finish and NCAA A cut in the 200 breaststroke for senior Emma Reaney and plenty of lifetime bests and NCAA B cuts spread throughout the team highlighted the final day of the 2015 ACC Women’s Swimming & Diving Championships for the University of Notre Dame, as the Irish placed sixth for the second consecutive year.

A day after winning the 100 breast championship for the second year in a row, Reaney qualified first in her favorite event, the 200 breast, during the prelims. However, Virginia’s Laura Simon came through with a monster swim in the finals, going a pool record 2:07.48 to out-touch Reaney by just .21 seconds (2:07.69). The Lawrence, Kansas native had stronger first and last laps, but Simon powered through the second lap in 32.19 and the third lap in 32.68 to narrowly beat Reaney. Reaney’s time of 2:07.69 also beat the old pool record.

With the runner-up finish, Reaney finishes her two-year ACC meet with four individual championships, a runner-up finish and five all-ACC scrolls in addition to her American record in the 200 breaststroke last season.

Elsewhere on the final night, junior Anna Grainger started the Irish off in the final session, finishing seventh in the “C” final of the 200 backstroke (23rd overall) in 2:02.37. Sophomore Katie Miller took sixth in the “B” final (14th overall) in 1:57.81 (NCAA B).

A lifetime best followed the 200 back, as sophomore Catherine Mulquin went 49.21 (NCAA B) in the 100 free to win the “C” final. She would have had the top time in the “B” final and finished eighth in the “A” final.

In addition to Reaney’s runner-up finish, sophomore Danielle Margheret swam a lifetime best going 2:13.00 (NCAA B) to take second (10th overall) in the “B” final. Junior Genevieve Bradford claimed 16th in 2:17.39 and freshman Sherri McIntee placed third in the “C” final (19th overall) in 2:16.07.

The final individual event of the night (200 fly), saw senior Courtney Whyte claim seventh overall in 1:58.18 (NCAA B), fellow senior Bridget Casey place 15th overall (1:59.82) and senior Melissa Scott earned 24th (2:02.57).

In the mile freestyle, freshman Molly Treble swam 16:57.19 to take 17th, while sophomore Molly Barry placed 19th (17:04.93) and senior Erin Foley claimed 21st (17:15.00).

On the platform, the Irish didn’t have a finals competitor, but junior Lindsey Streepey (18th – 210.90) and senior Allison Casareto (23rd – 195.45) both scored points for their squad.

The Irish wrapped up the meet with a seventh-place showing in the 400 free relay, as the foursome of Reaney, Galletti, Whyte and Mulquin went 3:19.95.

Notre Dame racked up 644 points during the four-day meet to top seven other squads.

Up next for the Irish could be a last chance meet March 1 to try and qualify more individuals for the NCAA Championships (March 19-21). The divers head to the NCAA Zone C meet March 12-14 looking to punch their ticket to NCAAs.

PRELIMS RECAP

In the final prelims of the meet, the Irish got off to a great start, as Miller qualified 13th in the 200 back (NCAA B – 1:57.34) and Grainger qualified 23rd (2:01.24).

Mulquin turned in a big swim in the 100 free, going 49.89 (NCAA B) to qualify 17th. She tied for 16th, but turned down the swim-off for the right to compete in the “B” final, because she was set to swim a leg of the 200 medley relay squad that was aiming for a time trial NCAA “A” cut.

Following the 100 free, Reaney qualified first in the 200 breast (NCAA B – 2:09.17), while Margheret qualified 10th (NCAA B – 2:14.71), as she crushed her seed time, and Bradford 16th (2:16.07) and McIntee 22nd (2:18.29) also advanced to the night’s finals.

An outstanding swim by Whyte in the prelims of the 200 fly secured her spot in the “A” final, as she went a life-time best 1:56.97 (NCAA B). Casey wasn’t far behind in 14th place (1:59.52 – NCAA B), while Scott took 23rd (2:01.79) to place into the “C” final.

The Irish closed out the prelims with a 200 medley time trial, as Galletti, Reaney, Whyte and Mulquin notched another NCAA B cut by touching the pad in 1:38.34.
