Reaney Earns BIG EAST Weekly Honors For Sixth Time In Career

Jan. 15, 2013

NOTRE DAME, Ind. – University of Notre Dame student-athlete Emma Reaney was honored Tuesday with her third BIG EAST Women’s Swimming and Diving Athlete of the Week award this season after breaking two Rolfs Aquatic Center records last Saturday in a pair of Irish dual wins over Michigan and Northwestern.

Reaney, who has now won six BIG EAST weekly plaques during her standout year and a half career, smashed the Rolfs 100 and 200 breaststroke records in picking up a pair of victories. Former USC Trojan and current Olympic swimmer Rebecca Soni previously set both records on Oct. 19, 2007.

The Lawrence, Kan., native began her day by lowering the 100 breast record from 1:00.81 to 59.79 to secure victory by over 2.5 seconds. Reaney next broke the 200-breast record, moving it from 2:11.47 to 2:10.75 in cruising to an easy six-plus second win. She closed out her day individually with a win in the 200 IM (2:00.83) before swimming the anchor leg of the winning 400 free relay team (3:24.73).

Reaney won three Honorable Mention All-America scrolls last season as a freshman and looks to add to that total this season as she has already automatically qualified for the NCAA Championships in the 100 and 200 breast, the 200 IM and the 400 medley relay. She sits fourth in the country in the 200 breast (2:07.60) and 200 IM (1:55.05), ninth in the 100 breast (52.57) and 11th in the 400 IM (4:08.63). The 400 medley relay team of Kelly Ryan, Reaney, Kim Holden and Catherine Galletti are ninth in the country (3:35.16).

Notre Dame returns to action this Saturday when it heads to in-state rival Indiana for an 11 a.m. dual meet.
