Columbus, Ohio – Rain washed out the final round of the Ohio State Lady Buckeye Invitational on Sunday leaving the Notre Dame women’s golf team tied for ninth with a 36-hole total of 636 after rounds on 317 and 319. The Irish tied for ninth with the University of Toledo and were 39 strokes behind tournament champion, Kent State.
The Golden Flashes finished six-strokes behind tournament-host Ohio State as they fired opening rounds of 300 and 297 for a 597 mark. Ohio State shot a 36-hole total of 603 (301-302) on their home course, the par 72, 6,037-yard Scarlet Course. Michigan State was third with a 604 (305-299), Indiana fourth with a 614 (302-312) and Purdue closed out the top five with a 620 (307-313).
Individually, Kent State placed three golfers in the top five led by tournament medalist Gabby Wedding’s three-over par 147 (79-68). Wedding wins the tournament by two strokes over teammate Martina Gillen (74-75), Michigan State’s Emily Bastel (78-71) and Ohio State’s Natalie Aber (74-75) as each golfer shot five-over par 149. Kent State’s third golfer in the top-five was Veronique Drouin (74-76) who tied for fifth with Ohio State’s Allison Hanna (76-74) with six-over par totals of 150.
For the Irish, freshman Karen Lotta (Los Angeles, Calif.) was Notre Dame’s top finisher as she tied for 11th, just missing her fifth top five finish of the year. Lotta shot rounds of 75 and 78 for a nine-over par 153. Senior Lauren Fuchs (Louisville, Ky.) was Notre Dame’s second finisher as she is tied for 48th with a 161 (78-83).
Fellow senior Kristen McMurtrie (Calgary, Alb.) tied for 50th with a 162 (84-78), sophomores Rebecca Rogers (Alpharetta, Ga.) and Shannon Byrne (Arlington Heights, Ill.) tied for 59th with 164 totals. Rogers shot a pair of 82’s on the day while Byrne opened with and 83 and followed with an 81 on the way to her 164. Terri Taibl (Jr., Elm Grove, Wis.) closed out the Notre Dame participants as she tied for 71st with a 168 (82-86).
