Rain Suspends Play During Second Round Of Mason Rudolph Intercollegiate

Oct. 22, 2007

FRANKLIN, Tenn. – Heavy rains resulted in play being suspended during Monday’s second round at the Mason Rudolph Intercollegiate, being played at the Vanderbilt Legends Club of Tennessee/Roper’s Knob Course (par 71/7,100 yards) in Franklin, Tenn. Teams began the round on time, but were called off the course at 11:30 a.m. CT (12:30 p.m. ET in South Bend) for two hours. Action resumed for a little more than an hour before conditions started to deteriorate further, and play was halted for the afternoon when the forecast didn’t appear promising.

Notre Dame started Monday’s second round tied for eighth place in the 18-team field after carding an eight-over par 292 during Sunday’s opening round. Ole Miss took the first round lead with a score of 283 (-1) atop the tightly-packed leaderboard where the top 11 schools were separated by just 10 strokes.

Freshman Tyler Hock (Ocala, Fla./Forest) was the top Irish individual through the first 18 holes, tying for 13th place with an opening-round 71 (E). Junior Josh Sandman (Greensboro, N.C./Southeast Guilford) is tied for 32nd place after shooting a two-over par 73 on Sunday. Sophomores Doug Fortner (Tustin, Calif./Foothill) and Kyle Willis (Lake Forest, Ill./Lake Forest) are one stroke further back in a tie for 41st place. Senior tri-captain Greg Rodgers (Phoenix, Md./St. Paul’s School) is tied for 77th place following his first-round 78 (+7). Senior tri-captain Mike King (Sidney, Ohio/Sidney) is playing this week as an individual participant and is in 87th place after opening with a nine-over par 80.

Weather permitting, Notre Dame will be back on course Tuesday beginning at 8 a.m. CT (9 a.m. ET in South Bend) to resume the second round of the Mason Rudolph Intercollegiate. Tournament officials then will make a determination about playing the final round or calling the event after 36 holes (which would make it official if conditions don’t permit further action). Complete results will be posted on the official Notre Dame athletics web site (www.und.com) upon completion of the day’s action. Fans also can obtain updates on the Irish at the Mason Rudolph Intercollegiate via the Notre Dame Sports Hotline (574-631-3000) and the Irish ALERT text message system (click here for more details).
