Citrus Springs, Fla. – Mother nature wreaked havoc on the final day of the El Diablo Intercollegiate golf tournament as rain forced cancellation of the final 18 holes in the 54-hole tourmament on Sunday. The results of the first day’s action at the 6,777-yard, par 72 El Diablo Golf and Country Club become the final totals.

The Notre Dame men’s golf team finished in an 18th-place tie with the University of Kentucky as both teams fired a 36-hole total of 29-over par 605. That put the Irish 26 strokes off the pace set by the University of Toledo as the Rockets turned in a three-over par 579 (301-278).

The Irish opened the tournament on Saturday with a 10-over par 298 which placed them sixth after the first 18 holes. Notre Dame then followed that with a second round total of 307 which dropped the Irish to 18th with a 605 total.

Toledo finished first in the tournament taking a four-stroke win over the University of Rhode Island (297-286-583) while Miami of Ohio (292-292-584), the University of Illinois (299-286-585) and Baylor University (289-297-586) closed out the top five.

Leading Notre Dame’s golfers were senior Alex Kent (Lambare, Paraguay) and junior Steve Ratay (Arlington Heights, Ill.) who played Saturday’s first 36 holes in four-over par 148 and tied for 32nd overall. Kent and Ratay each fired opening rounds of one-under par 71 before shooting 77 in the second round of play. The 148 total puts them eight strokes behind tournament medalist Scott Phillips of Rice University who shot a four-under par 140 (68-72).

Rounding out Notre Dame’s scoring were senior Pat Schaffler (Dallas, Tex.) who tied for 54th with a seven-over par 151 (76-75). Sophomore Kyle Monfort (Dublin, Ohio) finished at 102nd with a 36-hole total of 158 (80-78) and freshman Peter Rivas (New Orleans, La.) tied for 111th with a 162 total (83-79).
