NOTRE DAME, Ind. – After an impressive January, sophomore goaltender Cal Petersen was named the Hockey East Stop It Goaltending Goaltender of the Month on Wednesday, Feb. 3.
Petersen, who has started each of Notre Dame’s 26 games this season, posted a 5-1-3 record in January to go along with a 1.89 goals-against average and a .940 save percentage.
Petersen opened the month by leading the Irish to a pair of overtime ties at now 13th-ranked Denver (Jan. 1-2). In game one of the series, he made a season-high 49 saves, including 23 saves in the second period, to preserve a 1-1 tie. Then in game two, Petersen made 43 saves as Notre Dame and Denver played to a 2-2 tie. For the weekend, he posted a .968 save percentage.
Also in January, Petersen led the Irish to a weekend sweep at New Hampshire, including a 5-1 victory in game one (Jan. 22) and a 3-2 win in game two (Jan. 23). In the two-game series, Petersen posted a 1.51 goals-against average and a .940 save percentage.
On the season, Petersen is 14-5-7 with a 2.22 goals-against average and a .926 save percentage. He leads the country in minutes played (1,568:19) and percentage of team minutes played (98.3%) and is also tied for the national lead in total saves (725).
In Hockey East play, Petersen ranks third in goals-against average (1.85), fourth in save percentage (.928) and second in winning percentage (.796).
For his career, Petersen has now been named the Hockey East Goaltender of the Month twice (February, 2015). He has totaled eight weekly Hockey East awards, including being named the Hockey East Defensive Player of the Week three times this season (Nov. 2, Jan. 4 & Jan. 25).
Petersen and the 10th-ranked Irish will head out on the road this weekend to play a two-game series at Vermont (Feb. 5-6).
