EDEN PRAIRIE, Minn. — Sophomore goaltender Cal Petersen has been named one of 26 nominees for the 2016 Mike Richter Award, which honors the most outstanding goaltender in NCAA men’s hockey.

Let’s Play Hockey and the Herb Brooks Foundation announced the 26 nominees on Friday afternoon (Feb. 26).

The five finalists for the 2016 Mike Richter Award will be announced on Wednesday, March 16 and then winner will be announced by Mike Richter at the 2016 NCAA Men’s Frozen Four in Tampa, Fla. A committee of coaches, scouts and members of the media will select the five finalists and the eventual winner.

Petersen, who was also nominated for the award during his freshman season, is one of 12 underclassmen nominated for the award this season.

Petersen heads into the final weekend of the regular season with an 18-7-7 record on the season to go along with a 2.12 goals-against average and a .930 save percentage. He leads the nation in games started (34) and minutes played (19:27:37). In Hockey East play, Petersen is 14-4-2 with a 1.80 goals-against average and a .935 save percentage.

Petersen was named the Hockey East Goaltender of the Month for January and he has also earned Hockey East Defensive Player of the Week honors three times this season (Nov. 2, Jan. 4 and Jan. 25).

Dan Colleran, associate athletics communications director at the University of Notre Dame, has been a part of Fighting Irish Media since August 2015 and coordinates all media and publicity efforts surrounding the Notre Dame hockey and men’s golf programs. A native of Walpole, Massachusetts, Colleran spent the previous three years working with the men’s hockey and soccer programs at Providence College.
