NOTRE DAME, Ind. – After going 2-0 in both singles and doubles last week, including clinching the win over then-No. 21 Michigan Saturday, University of Notre Dame men’s tennis student-athlete Billy Pecor has been named BIG EAST Player of the Week, the league office announced Tuesday.
Pecor is now the third different Irish standout to earn the conference’s weekly award this season following in the footsteps of teammates Greg Andrews and Quentin Monaghan.
The Houston, Texas native had himself quite a week, as he went undefeated in both singles and doubles. In a close 4-3 loss on the road to No. 7 Kentucky last Tuesday, Pecor teamed with freshman Alex Lawson to knock off Ryuji Hirooka and Alejandro Gomez, 8-6, at two doubles. In singles he defeated No. 97 Juan Pablo Mura in three sets, 6-3, 5-7, 7-6 (7-2).
Against the Wolverines Pecor teamed with Lawson to help the Irish pick up their lone doubles win on the day, an 8-5 win at two over Vlad Stefan and Justin Rossi, before clinching the match at four singles for Notre Dame. With the match tied at three and all eyes on court four, Pecor knocked off Michael Zhu in three sets, 6-4, 6-7 (4-7), 6-4, to seal the match for the Irish.
This season Pecor is 4-3 in singles and 4-2 in doubles and is ranked No. 55 in doubles with Lawson.
The No. 25 Irish hit the road at 12 p.m. this Saturday when they take on No. 4 Ohio State in Columbus at Varsity Tennis Courts.
