Paul Springer Named BIG EAST Cross Country Athlete Of The Week

Sept. 8, 2010

NOTRE DAME, Ind. – Following an individual first-place finish at the Valparaiso Crusader Open last week, Notre Dame men’s cross country senior Paul Springer (Unionville HS, Kennett Square, Pa.) was selected as the BIG EAST Conference male cross country runner of the week, as announced by the league on Wednesday.

Springer won the title at Sunset Hills Park in Valparaiso and finished the six-kilometer race in 19:34.50 despite winds up to 35 miles-per-hour including a headwind during the final stretch. Notre Dame scored 16 points to win the meet and placed eight finishers in the top 10.

The Crusader Open was Springer’s first competition since the 2010 BIG EAST Indoor Championships, when he was forced to stop due to an injured achilles which prevented Springer from competition during the 2010 outdoor track season.

The Irish will take this week off before the National Catholic Invitational on Friday, Sept. 17, at Notre Dame’s Nine-Hole Golf Course.
