Oct. 16, 2012

NOTRE DAME, Ind. – University of Notre Dame men’s soccer players Patrick Hodan (Fr./M) and Harrison Shipp (Jr./F) have earned weekly honors from the BIG EAST Conference. Hodan was named the league’s rookie of the week and Shipp was selected to the weekly honor roll.

Hodan (Brookfield, Wis./Marquette University High School) tallied five points on two goals and one assist in two matches last week. He registered a career-high three points on one goal and one assist in Saturday’s 6-1 victory at Seton Hall. After the Pirates sliced the Irish lead to one (2-1) in the 42nd minute, Hodan scored 29 seconds later to make it a 3-1 contest at halftime. He also assisted on Notre Dame’s fifth goal of the match.

Hodan netted the lone Irish goal in last Tuesday’s 2-1 setback at Northwestern. The freshman midfielder has played in every match this season, including one start, and has 11 points on four goals and three assists. The goal and assist totals are tied for third on the team and the point total is fourth.

This is Hodan’s first BIG EAST Rookie of the Week award. The Fighting Irish have garnered six weekly awards from the league this season.

Harrison Shipp

Shipp (Lake Forest, Ill./Lake Forest) recorded the first hat trick of his career in the victory at Seton Hall. He gave the Irish a 2-0 lead in the 38th minute and then made it a 4-1 contest in the 71st minute. Shipp tallied the game’s final goal with just over 10 minutes remaining in the match.

It was the first hat trick for an Irish player since Bright Dike scored three times in a 5-0 win over Michigan on Sept. 1, 2009. Shipp ranks second on the team in goals (5), assists (4) and points (14) this season.

The seventh-ranked Fighting Irish (11-3-0) will play host to BIG EAST Blue Division foe Providence on Saturday. Kickoff is slated for noon (ET) at Alumni Stadium.
