Palmer Jackson Claims 2022 Jones Cup Invitational Title

University of Notre Dame men’s golf junior Palmer Jackson continued his stellar junior season with an individual victory at the 2022 Jones Cup Invitational on Sunday, February, 6, 2022. Billed as the biggest early-season amateur golf tournament in the country, the Jones Cup is held at Ocean Forest Golf Club in Sea Island, Georgia.

“The Jones Cup was one of the truest tests of golf I’ve faced,” Jackson said after his victory.

“The golf course and conditions were a true challenge. Wind, rain, and cold were just a few of this week’s battles. South Bend prepared me well for the conditions. To be this year’s champion is an honor I will always be proud of.”

Jackson fired a first round 66, followed by a 69 in the second round to take a five shot lead into Sunday’s action. He held off the rest of the field to claim the individual title, finishing with a 76 and a total of 211, five shots under par. Facing some challenging conditions on the course Sunday, no golfer in the field managed to post a score under 71. Jackson ended up three strokes ahead of Logan McAlister from Oklahoma at 214.

Jackson was not the only Irish golfer in the field. Senior Davis Chatfield turned in an impressive weekend as well with a 74-72-77 for 223, +7 and finished in a tie for 16th place.

The highly competitive 84-player field included four players currently listed in the top-25 of the Golfweek/Amateur.com World Amateur Ranking. Former winners of the Jones Cup include PGA Tour star Justin Thomas, the 2017 PGA Championship winner and FedEx Cup champion, Patrick Reed, the 2018 Masters champion, and Corey Conners, who finished seventh last year at The Players Championship, tied for eighth at the Masters and tied for 15th at the British Open.

Jackson’s victory will earn him an exemption to compete in the 2022 RSM Classic which will be held at the Sea Island Golf Club in November of 2022.
